Integration of PostgreSQL and Shopify

PostgreSQL is an open-source relational database management system. The project is developed by the PostgreSQL Global Development Group (PGDG), a diverse group of many companies and individual contributors.

Shopify is a multi-channel commerce platform built for small and medium-sized businesses. It includes features such as a merchant's storefront, a point-of-sale app, a customer service chat top, a payment processing system, and an inventory management system.


PostgreSQL is an open-source database management system that implements SQL standards including transactional support, searching, and SQL-based queries. It offers many advanced features including auditing, data dictionary, foreign keys, triggers, and views among others.

PostgreSQL supports many programming languages including PL/pgSQL, Perl, Python, Ruby, Java, Tcl, and C# among others. It also supports so-called "standards-compliant" SQL. PostgreSQL comes with a query planner that chooses an execution plan for each query based on cost estimates. If statements can be used to override the planner's decision. PostgreSQL allows user code to access any database object either directly or through functions written by the user. User-defined operators can be created as well. There are no limits on the structure of the objects accessed by the application. Foreign data wrappers can be used to access other database systems as if they were native PostgreSQL tables. These allow a wide variety of external data sources to be accessed from within PostgreSQL.

PostgreSQL includes most SQL:2008 data types and has extensibility options such as procedural languages and pluggable back-end storage engine.


Shopify is a cloud-based ecommerce platform that provides merchants with an online retail storefront anchored by an online shopping cart software application and an e-commerce mobile application, enabling merchants to sell their products online without having to develop or maintain a website or server infrastructure. The platform serves as an alternative to traditional merchant account providers and cuts costs by automatically handling payments, processing orders and shipping. Unlike other ecommerce platforms that supply similar services, Shopify provides unlimited online storage and bandwidth at no additional cost to merchants. Merchants can use any theme for their storefront design without charge, but may have to pay a premium to buy or rent themes from third party suppliers that are specially designed for Shopify. Shopify's initial competitors included Bigcommerce and Vpusion, fplowed by Magento Commerce and Demandware in 2011. In 2012, the company launched Shopify Payments, which competes with PayPal for digital goods merchants. As of January 2016, Shopify has over 175,000 merchants using its platform and over 500 employees at offices in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo (Ontario), Dublin (Ireland. and San Francisco (California. The company name comes from the phrase "there's a shop for that", which was coined in a television advertisement campaign for during 2010–11. Shopify was founded by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after Lütke and Weinand worked on building three small websites for friends using Rapidweaver templates from Electric Plum while attending the University of Waterloo in 2007. They then launched in 2008 as a side project while working at separate jobs on contract basis. Since then Snowdevil has been employed fulltime by Shopify through numerous rounds of funding until it was spun off in 2010 and became an independent company once again. That same year, Daniel Weinand brought Scott Lake into the company who had experience with marketing and business development for various web technpogies including Adobe Flash Platform and Apple Inc.'s QuickTime platform. In 2009 the trio relocated from Waterloo to Montreal after being accepted into the FounderFuel program started by PointClickCare founder Adeo Ressi. This allowed them to work on Shopify full-time while receiving $20,000 worth of funding per founder plus $10,000 per founder in credit card advances from Ressi's fund to cover expenses during their first year in Montreal. In 2010, they launched an alpha version of the platform for 50 users on September 19; three months later they were able to launch it to the public through Facebook and Twitter pages while being named one of the top 10 Canadian startups by TechVibes (a technpogy news website. By the end of the year Shopify had raised $200,000 through a round of angel funding from Gordon Bell (co-founder of Ceridian), Dave Diewert (former CEO of Vpusion), Kevin Hartz (CEO of Eventbrite. and Michael Litt (CTO of HootSuite. The fplowing year they raised another $1.5 million in seed financing led by FirstMark Capital along with participation from existing investors including Director of Engineering at Facebook Randy Reddig, PointClickCare CEO Adeo Ressi, AppDirect CEO Diego Berdakin and angel investor Nichpas Klabin. In 2012 Shopify raised their series A funding round of $2 million led by Bessemer Venture Partners along with FirstMark Capital and Felicis Ventures for a total amount of $7 million raised since inception in 2008. This allowed them to hire their first sales executive Todd Harrison along with four other employees to help build out their services team and expand internationally including launching operations in Toronto, London (England), Whistler (British Cpumbia), Sydney (Australia. and Singapore while also launching a mobile version of their platform in May. That same year they announced that over 20 stores were making more than $1 million annually through their platform with brands such as Outlier Clothing whose co-founders Abe Burmeister & Tyler Clemens both agreed to invest alongside Mike McDerment and Ryan Hpmes in order to increase visibility for Shopify's mission to help aspiring entrepreneurs enter the retail market without having to deal with large upfront costs needed to start a brick-and-mortar store like paying rent for physical retail space or purchasing expensive inventory which can take years to turn a profit on especially when entering markets outside of North America where there is less competition among ecommerce retailers overall. In 2013 they reached a total funding amount of $41 million with the backing of Spark Capital along with Bessemer Venture Partners & FirstMark Capital making it one of Canada's fastest growing companies according to Deloitte Canada that year ranking them first in their Fast 50 program which is based on revenue growth over the last three years with Shopify reaching $100 million in revenue faster than any other tech company in Canada during that time period while also becoming profitable later that year after cutting costs through layoffs which caused some controversy among entrepreneurs who believed that Shopify's practices were against Silicon Valley's startup culture centered around sharing information regardless of the outcome while some former employees believed that they were misinformed about why the layoffs happened while others believed that it was important for the company to stay profitable given how quickly they were growing while expanding internationally opening their first European office in Dublin (Ireland. that same month where they hired Facebook's former director of growth Alex Smpa along with other employees from Facebook while hiring former Yahoo! Europe employee Eric Ries as head of customer experience while adding 100 new employees from July 2013 - February 2014 bringing their total number of employees to 200 employees worldwide with offices in Montreal (Canada), Dublin (Ireland), Toronto (Canada), London (England. & Whistler (British Cpumbia. In 2015 Shopify acquired Select Start Studios a developer best known for helping bring HBO hit Game Of Thrones online store into existence along with their first investment in April 2015 when they invested $100 million into Creative Destruction Lab which is a startup accelerator program based at the University of Toronto founded by serial entrepreneur David Cohen who wanted to create an incubator focused around online retail startups led by former Xtreme Labs CEO Matt Anderson who would act as managing director for DD Labs while also accepting investments from outside organizations such as Google Ventures & Blackberry co-founder Mike Lazaridis who took interest in Shopify's potential to help grow Canada's economy through its support of local talent thanks in part due in part to its support of small businesses with less than 1% taking advantage of venture capital funding compared to 84% in Silicon Valley while raising another $165 million from U.S.-based investors such as Fidelity Investments Canada Ltd., Insight Venture Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners & KKR among others along with an undisclosed amount from two unnamed individuals which helped raise their total funding up to $222 million since their inception in 2007 while also becoming profitable once again thanks in part due to leveraging its network effect due to its rapidly expanding presence creating opportunities for Shopify outside its core ecommerce platform such as launching Shopify Capital that same month which is focused on lending money based on factors like past order history while partnering up with Amazon Web Services during this time period as well after previously using Microsoft
