Integration of PDF4me and OpsGenie

  • Pipes
  • A pipe is a connection between two applications through which data flows from one application to another. The pipe can be two-way or one-way. In case of the two-way pipe, data can flow from A to B or from B to A. A one-way pipe only allows data to flow from A to B.

The integration of PDF4me and OpsGenie is done using pipes. The pipe by which data flows from PDF4me to OpsGenie is called “Send To OpsGenie”. Similarly, the pipe by which data flows from OpsGenie to PDF4me is called “Forward to PDF4me”. These pipes offer an easy way of integrating PDF4me and OpsGenie together by enabling users to forward the alerts generated by OpsGenie to PDF4me.

  • Data
  • In order for the integration between PDF4me and OpsGenie to work properly, the user needs sufficient information about the files and the alerts that are forwarded to PDF4me. So, all the users of PDF4me who use OpsGenie also get an additional benefit in the form of some new properties being added in the PDF4me dashboard. The properties added in this integration are as fplows:

    • File Type - It is always “Alerts”. However, if an alert is forwarded from a different source then it will mention the name of that source. For example, if the alert originates from an email then it will show an “Alerts” value for File Type but if it comes from Slack then it will show a “Slack” value for File Type.
    • Email Subject - It contains the subject of the alert that originated from an email medium. An email medium can be either Gmail, Microsoft Outlook/Office 365, Slack or Zendesk.
    • Team Name - It contains the name of the team that initially generated the alert. If someone forwards an alert to another team then it will show the name of that team but if someone forwards an alert within their own team then it will show their own team’s name.
    • ID - It contains an integer value that represents a unique identifier of the alert. This number remains constant irrespective of whether an alert is forwarded or not. So, if someone forwards an alert then they will see that same number in ID regardless of whether they forward it or not since it is always a valid ID even though it may change when there is a change in state or priority of an alert. Also, this ID does not matter for a given alert because users cannot search for any alerts using this ID alone. They need to search using other fields as well like Email Subject and Team Name etcetera in order to find out whether an alert has been forwarded or not. Generally speaking, users will use these properties (File Type, Email Subject, Team Name. while searching in order to find out whether an alert has been forwarded or not. File Type might have a different value depending on what kind of pipeline is used but these three properties will remain unchanged regardless of what type of pipeline is used. So, these three properties are mainly used by users for searching purposes rather than for any other purpose related to forwarding or non-forwarding of alerts. Users can search for alerts using these three properties independent of whether alerts were forwarded or not . However, if something changes in any one of these properties then that change will reflect on all forms where these properties appear because once any change happens in any one of them then that change will also reflect in other two properties as well so that users can easily search for them without having to search for them separately on each form where they appear . So, if someone forwards an alert then all three properties will change so that users don’t have to search for them separately on each form where they appear . Otherwise, if an alert has not been forwarded then these three properties will remain unchanged since they contain information about the alerts that were originally generated by users and they did not have to be forwarded anywhere else . The only thing that changes whenever someone forwards an alert is that they see a new integer value in ID since this value changes whenever there is a change in state or priority of an alert although this value doesn’t matter since users cannot search for any alerts using this value alone but they have to search using other fields as well like Email Subject and Team Name etcetera . This new value will also be reflected whenever there is any change in status or priority of an existing alert . So, instead of showing a new value after every time an alert has been forwarded regardless of whether there was a change in status or priority , this new value will only appear whenever there is any change in status or priority . In case there isn’t any change in status or priority then this new value won’t appear . There are certain cases where changes happen irrespective of whether there was a change in status or priority . These cases are related to initiation and completion events . When someone initiates an alert via their browser then a new value will appear even if there hasn’t been any change in status or priority . Similarly, when someone completes an alert via their browser then a new value will appear even if there hasn’t been any change in status or priority . This new value appears regardless of whether it was initiated by someone who forwarded the alert or not because initiating an alert via their browser always generates some new value even if they had forwarded it earlier on . So, whatever happens regarding initiation or completion events , the ID property will be updated with some new integer value at least once regardless of whether there was a change in status or priority because initiation and completion events are always related to initiating and completing tasks through browsers .
