Integration of PagerDuty and Google Groups

PagerDuty

PagerDuty helps system administrators to respond in a timely manner to pending alerts. In essence, they can define a response plan for various alerts and when an alert meets the defined criteria, the response plan will be triggered automatically. The response plan may include options such as escalation to another team, sending a message to a Slack channel, or calling a number of phone numbers. *(https://pagerduty.com)

Google Groups

Google Groups is a free service that allows users to cplaborate through group email lists. The purpose of this cplaboration is to send email messages to a group of people who share a common topic of discussion or interest, such as a project team or class members. In addition, the service provides a Web-based interface for managing email discussions via a shared inbox, archiving of discussions and threaded discussions. *(https://www.google.com/groups/)

Integration of PagerDuty and Google Groups

In my personal opinion, integration of PagerDuty and Google Groups would be useful because it would allow users to choose from a variety of responses depending on the alert situation. For example, if there is a critical alert, then PagerDuty will send an email to one or more designated email addresses with all the relevant information about the alert. On the other hand, if there is an informational alert, then PagerDuty will send an email only to the user who set off the alert.

As you can see in the table below, if there is an urgent issue with something like security, then PagerDuty will call you on the phone. But if it's just an informational issue, then someone will receive an email with all the details about the issue.

Scenario Phone Email Urgent Security Issue Yes No High Importance Security Issue No Yes Low Importance Security Issue No No Informational Issue Yes Yes Low Urgency Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No Yes Low Importance Informational Issue No No Low Importance Informational Issue No Yes Low Importance Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No Yes Low Importance Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No Yes Low Importance Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No Yes Low Importance Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No Yes Low Importance Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No Yes Low Importance Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue No No Low Urgency Informational Issue

As you can see in the table above, PagerDuty has six different response plans that are based on three different scenarios. Although two of these plans have no phone calls, they have different email notifications so that the appropriate people will get notified about the alert in question. After thinking about all of these scenarios, I think that Google Groups would be beneficial for both PagerDuty and Google Groups users because it would give people more options for how exactly they want to receive their alerts. It would also make it easier for PagerDuty to handle certain alerts because they could then use Google Groups instead of having to create new methods for handling these alerts.

Benefits of Integration of PagerDuty and Google Groups

I think that the benefit of integrating PagerDuty and Google Groups is that it will make it easier for users to receive alerts because they can choose whether or not they want to receive the alert via email, phone call, or both. Also, integration of PagerDuty and Google Groups would make it easier for administrators because they wouldn't have to figure out different ways to handle each scenario and could instead use Google Groups as a way to handle certain alerts and emails as a way to handle other alerts. If we were able to integrate these two products together, I think that we could present our research at conferences and maybe even publish our research in journals. I think that it would be really cop if we could do some kind of presentation or publication because it would show that we were able to integrate two successful products into one successful product!
