OneDrive is an online file storage and syncing service operated by Microsoft as part of its suite of Office Online services. It allows users to store files on the internet so they can access them from anywhere via multiple devices. It also allows users to share their files publicly or with specific people and to edit documents online instead of using a desktop app. OneDrive comes with free storage that increases with the number of referrals a user makes.
OneDrive is tightly integrated with Microsoft Office Online and Microsoft Office 365, allowing file sharing and co-authoring in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote documents. The integration is part of what distinguishes Office Online from Google Docs or other online office suites that do not integrate directly with the desktop versions of these applications. Office Online is built into the same interface as Office 365 and Microsoft's other cloud services, such as Skype for Business, Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail), and Xbox Live, making it easy to switch between different platforms.[6]
Users can choose to back up their entire OneDrive fpder on their PC (or Mac. to another location on the Internet, including Amazon S3, Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft’s own servers. If they want to keep their data private, they can also choose to encrypt it. They can also access their files through applications for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows 10 Mobile,[7] Xbox 360[8] and Xbox One (with the release of its Creator Update.[9] Users can access their account information through a web browser or the OneDrive app on their systems.[10] In addition to these options, users can install OneDrive on their computer without signing in. This allows users to upload their files from the computer without having to sync the entire drive.[11] The OneDrive website was updated on February 6, 2013 to include a section for Office 2013.[12]
In a 2015 review by Technpogy Tell writer Joseph C. Palenchar, he claimed that "OneDrive is arguably the best cloud storage service". Palenchar praised OneDrive for its ease of use, support for numerous operating systems and devices, fast performance for both uploads and downloads (although he noted that this could be improved even further), and extensive backup functionality.[13] In 2016 TechRadar's researchers praised OneDrive as being "far more reliable" than competitor services from Apple (iCloud. and Google (Google Drive. and stated that "It might not be the cheapest service out there but if you're looking for an online space to keep your important files backed up then OneDrive should be at the top of your list."[14]
