In order to create an outline, you first need to know what the article is about. Here is a good question to consider when formulating your article outline. "What is my basic point?" The answer to this question is your thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence that summarizes your basic point or argument. It is a complete sentence that gives your readers the point of your article. For example in the previous paragraph, the thesis statement is "The integration of Nutshell and Basecamp Classic will lead to benefits for both companies." This sentence summarizes the basic point of the article. It tells the reader why you are writing your article. In fact, it tells the reader everything they need to know about your article. Your article should support this statement. In order to write an article that supports your thesis statement, you need to have an outline. When you have an outline, you can organize your information in a way that supports your main idea. If you don't have an outline, your ideas will be all over the place. The reader will not know what you are trying to say. Your article will be unfocused and confusing. On the other hand, if you do have an outline, you will have a spid structure to organize your ideas on paper. You will be able to organize your ideas in a way that makes sense to you and your audience. The more organized and coherent your article is, the better it will be received by your audience. At this point in our sample article, we are just trying to come up with something for each section. As we proceed through the writing process, we will refine these sections much more carefully.

Part 3 - Drafting Your Essay

Step 6 - Outline Your Essay

    What is an Outline?

An outline is a simple way of organizing your ideas before writing your article. An outline can be used to organize all types of writing - articles, reports, term papers, etc. An outline can also be used for many different purposes such as planning a presentation or preparing for a meeting. In all cases, an outline organizes whatever it is that you are working on into a logical structure that allows you to easily plan and manage details related to your project. A good outline should help you accomplish three things:

It should help you organize your ideas into a logical sequence so that you can express them clearly and coherently.

It should enable you to see how well your ideas fit together into a whpe so that you can understand whether or not your project addresses its subject completely and thoroughly.

It should help you estimate how much time it will take to complete your project so that you can adjust your schedule accordingly.

How Do You Write An Outline?

An outline for an article has two basic parts. (1. an introduction, and (2. body paragraphs that expand on each part of the thesis statement (which we discussed earlier. Each body paragraph usually has three parts. (1. a topic sentence that states the main idea of the paragraph, (2. supporting sentences that give details about this idea, and (3. transition sentences that connect one idea to another idea throughout the paragraph and entire article. Let's illustrate each step in this process using our sample thesis statement as an example. "The integration of Nutshell and Basecamp Classic will lead to benefits for both companies." Our introduction would look like this:

    1st Paragraph - Introduction:

    Introduction. Thesis Statement Introduction

Body Paragraphs - Body 1 - Topic Sentence - Supporting Sentences - Transition Sentences

Body Paragraphs - Body 2 - Topic Sentence - Supporting Sentences - Transition Sentences

Body Paragraphs - Body 3 - Topic Sentence - Supporting Sentences - Transition Sentences

    Conclusion:

    Conclusion. Restatement of Thesis Statement

Our body paragraphs would look like this. 1st Paragraph - Body 1 – Topic Sentence – Supporting Sentences – Transition Sentences; 2nd Paragraph - Body 2 – Topic Sentence – Supporting Sentences – Transition Sentences; 3rd Paragraph - Body 3 – Topic Sentence – Supporting Sentences – Transition Sentences; Conclusion – Restatement of Thesis Statement.
