Nutshell is a free mobile app for iOS and Android. Nutshell is designed for use by patients or anyone who has a personal stake in a patient’s health care—like a family member or healthcare provider. It is simple enough for use by patients, but flexible enough for use by caregivers and physicians alike.

In the United States, the population of people with diabetes is projected to grow from about 29 million to more than 50 million by 2040. At the same time, the percentage of Americans with high blood pressure will rise from about 34% to nearly 50 percent. Numbers like these mean increased demand for healthcare services. AerisWeather is a weather app for Android and iOS that plots current temperature on a map and allows users to customize temperature range for different types of weather alerts. For example, you can set your temperature range for rainy weather alerts between 45 and 55 degrees, and the app will notify you if temperatures reach those levels. The app also provides weather forecasts and alerts for severe weather and other natural disasters.

One such integration would be to allow users to view their current blood glucose levels alongside their current weather conditions. Through integration with Nutshell, AerisWeather users can easily check their blood glucose levels when they wake up in the morning, when they are exercising, or when they are in bed at night. Users can easily see when their blood glucose levels are within the range recommended by their doctors for diabetics—80 to 180 mg/dL—or above the range recommended by their doctors for non-diabetics—90 to 130 mg/dL. This will allow users to see how foods they eat affect their blood glucose levels, which will increase self-awareness of foods that trigger high or low blood glucose levels.
• Healthcare Provider Feedback. Integration with Nutshell would allow healthcare providers to view patient blood glucose levels alongside current temperature ranges in order to help provide better healthcare services to patients with diabetes. Providers would be able to see how different factors affect patients’ blood glucose levels in real time, which would allow providers to recommend changes in diet or exercise habits that would improve patient health outcomes.
