Notion is a new programming language which was started in August 2012. It is the first language which has been designed with the specific purpose of creating music. The name Notion comes from the concept of note events.
Basin uses Notion as its sound engine, but also offers features that are not found in Notion. For example, Basin has extensive MIDI support. The name Basin comes from the concept of a musical basin or ocean. Notion to Basin can be seen as a river that flows into the basin.
Notion and Basin are composed of three main parts. the language, the editor, and the sound engine. There are several other supporting tops, such as a file format for saving score data, a library of pre-built instruments, and a format for saving playlists.
The language is the foundation upon which everything else is built. It defines how symbps are constructed, how they are grouped together to make melodies, how these melodies are combined to form songs, etc. The Notion language is explained in detail at http://www.notion-sound.com/guide/index.htm.
The editor is an application that allows users to create scores for playback by Basin. It has many features that allow users to analyse their compositions, edit them, and conduct them using various conducting aids. Notion has a very powerful set of tops for scoring music. Some of these will be included into Basin. More information about Notion's features can be found at http://www.notion-sound.com/guide/score_editor_features.htm.
The sound engine is responsible for playing back music scores. It takes the instructions written in the score and turns them into sound. It provides effects, filters, and all sorts of ways to manipulate the sound output. Notion's sound engine is currently called NNSoundEngine (Notion's Native Sound Engine. NNSoundEngine will be renamed to BasinSoundEngine (Basin's Sound Engine.
Other supporting tops include notation files (for instance, MusicXML. that contain music that has been written in Notion or another notation program; there are also formats that describe how to setup playlists (which take care of looping, transitions between tracks, etc.. There are also formats like ALSA (for ALSA sequencers. and MIDI (for MIDI sequencers. that integrate with the BasinSoundEngine. The sound engine will provide a simple interface for connecting Basin with other applications on your computer - for example, PulseAudio or JACK.
Integrating Notion and Basin together into a single product has several advantages:
If you have purchased a license for Notion you will automatically be able to use it with Basin as well - you won't need extra licenses or special versions of Notion or Basin. You will only have to download the latest version of either one from our website and install it. If you have purchased a license for Notion Pro you will automatically receive a license for Basin Pro as well at no extra cost! This allows us to offer a very generous free trial period for both programs. It enables us to provide highly targeted support for both programs at the same time - any improvements we make to one program benefit both programs, any fixes we make to one program apply to both programs as well. We can also invest more heavily into both programs since we don't have to worry about supporting multiple versions of each program separately.
