Datadog is a cloud-based monitoring service for IT infrastructure and applications. It provides metrics and events from across the entire stack, including applications, operating systems, containers, networks, and more, and delivers them in real time to users’ browser- or mobile-based dashboards and alerts (Datadog, 2017.
Nimble is a storage management platform that leverages an agent-less architecture and provides a flexible way to manage data. It allows customers to create snapshots and clones of their data, and then choose where they want to store it — on-premises or in the cloud. Nimble can create as many as 1,000 snapshots per second as well as clone virtual machines at a rate of 1,000 per hour. In addition, it can move data from one cloud to another at a rate of 40 TB per hour. The ability to clone VMs makes Nimble ideal for those who need to test new software patches before implementing them into a live environment.
Nimble supports integration with Datadog, a cloud-monitoring spution which enables IT professionals to monitor their cloud resources, services, apps, and other IT infrastructure components. The integration makes Nimble metrics available inside Datadog dashboards. Data from Nimble can be cplected by Datadog using a global namespace key which you create in the Nimble UI. The fplowing shows the steps required to implement the integration:
Log in to your Datadog account and select “Integrations” from the left navigation menu. Select the “Add Integration” option. Choose Nimble from the list of supported integrations. Configure the integration by entering the global namespace key that was created in step 3 of the previous section. Click on “Save Integration” when done.
The integration allows you to view several important metrics in your Datadog dashboard like number of snapshots created per day, number of clones created per day, number of clones migrated per day, number of clones deleted per day, amount of disk space used in the last 24 hours for various file groups, current storage capacity used in percent, etc. You can also view performance metrics like average response time for snapshot creation requests, average response time for snapshot deletion requests, average response time for clone creation requests, average response time for clone deletion requests, etc. (Datadog, 2017.
The integration of Nimble with Datadog allows you to monitor several important aspects of your storage environment in real time. This ensures that you can quickly identify any issues that may arise in your storage environment before it becomes a problem for your organization.
