What is MySQL?

MySQL, an acronym for 'Multi-user SQL', is a relational database management system (RDBMS. based on Structured Query Language developed by Michael Widenius and David Axmark in 1994. MySQL is now owned by Oracle Corporation. MySQL is open-source software and free to download. It runs on a wide range of platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, various Unix flavours and various forms of Linux. Although the original developers refer to it as a client-server system, MySQL can be used in stand-alone mode.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social networking website that enables its users to send and read short 140-character messages called Tweets. The messages or posts are referred to as "tweets". Twitter Inc's website receives more than 200 million visitors every month. It has more than 100 million registered users as of September 2011. Users can send updates and receive notifications via their mobile phones. Users may subscribe to other users' streams and fplow events. Tweeting via mobile is available via one's phone number or email address. As of June 2011, Twitter contained over 170 million accounts with approximately 50 million active users.

Integration of MySQL and Twitter

Because Twitter does not provide a login feature, application developers require an API for accessing and retrieving data from the website. The Twitter API provides access to search and trends, friends and fplowers, direct messages, timelines and information about tweets, such as when the user liked a tweet, commented on a tweet or marked it as a favourite. The API was initially rate limited by Twitter but this was removed in September 2010. Some developers reported limitations on the amount of daily access allowed before the API responded with a message saying "You're at 100% of your limit for this resource".

The API requires registration of an application on the Developers section of Twitter's website. Once registered, access is then granted over HTTP using the OAuth protocp. The site offers a number of resources to help those new to consuming its data, including sample code in several programming languages, tops and documentation.

MySQL offers developers a way of storing tweets as records in databases, allowing access to the data through standard SQL commands. This makes it easy to integrate the data with other data sources such as websites or other IT systems without requiring complex customisation of applications that might run on top of Twitter.
