Software. MySQL and Daylite.
MySQL is an open source database management system (DBMS. that uses Structured Query Language (SQL. It is an enterprise-level software that is used to maintain databases for websites and software applications. MySQL is the most widely used open source database management system and is supported by many programming languages including C, C++, Perl, Python, Java and PHP. The name MySQL is derived from the word My, which means small in Swedish, and the word SQL.
How does it work
MySQL is a relational DBMS which means that data is stored in tables and can easily be accessed with SQL expressions. It uses Structured Query Language (SQL. to manipulate data and create new tables. When a user makes a query on a table, the query goes through a process called parsing. The results of the query are then returned as rows of data. MySQL supports all standard SQL statements with the exception of stored procedures. Stored procedures are not supported because MySQL does not support multi-threading.
How do you use it
MySQL has many uses. It can be used as a general purpose database or as a back-end server for web applications. Many popular websites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter store their data on MySQL databases. It can be used in a variety of industries such as finance and healthcare. Using MySQL requires programming knowledge since it requires users to write SQL queries to get information from the database. However, there are many tops available such as phpMyAdmin that allow users to manage a database by using a simple web interface. MySQL has been installed in many servers such as IBM AIX, HP-UX and Microsoft Windows Server. It can also be installed in most operating systems including Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.
Brief History:
MySQL was created by Michael Widenius when he was working at Linköping University's Department of Computer Science in 1991. His original idea was to create a large database that could easily be managed by using SQL commands which would eventually become the basis for what is known today as MySQL. He built on this idea with his cpleague David Axmark and together they went on to create a company called MySQL AB in 1995. In 2008 Sun Microsystems acquired MySQL AB for $1 billion USD making it one of the largest acquisitions of a European tech company ever made by an American company. Michael Widenius, David Axmark and Allan Larsson left the company after this acquisition and started MariaDB which is basically a version of MySQL that is free and open source but includes some proprietary features. Many other companies have created their own versions of MySQL such as EnterpriseDB, Amazon Web Services Database Services and SugarCRM which has also gone on to become successful. Many companies still use MySQL due to its proven track record and ease of use even though there are more advanced options available today.
A Brief History of Daylite:
Daylite is an open source project that was created by Open Object in 2005 and has since grown into something much larger than anyone ever imagined it would become. It allows users to easily create databases for their business or organization using a simple drag-and-drop interface. It is designed to be easy to use without any programming knowledge required. Users simply need to enter their desired information into the application and it will create the necessary database tables for them that are linked together with relations so that it can easily be accessed with SQL queries. It stores its data in an XML format which makes it easy for users to import their data into other applications. It can be used on both Windows and Mac operating systems and it may be used on Linux operating systems if they are running under WINE emulation software. Daylite was originally created to replace standalone database software such as FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Access but only because it was cheaper to develop than buying dedicated database systems that were already paid for by the end user organizations that were purchasing them. Now it is being used by many different organizations around the world because it is very simple to use yet it still provides enough features for users to manage their database effectively. Daylite has many powerful features including:
The latest version of Daylite is 1.2 which was released in 2010. There have been no updates since then due to lack of funding but the developers are still working on creating new features and upgrading existing ones despite the lack of funding. They hope to release an updated version sometime in the future but they are unsure if they will continue developing it since they recently received funding from another source instead of relying on donations from users who want to keep the program growing.
