MonkeyLearn is a machine learning platform that allows you to classify and extract features from text, images, and audio. As an example, the website has over 30 different models that you can use as building blocks to create your own custom model. It has a wide variety of applications such as sentiment analysis, Twitter analytics, automatic categorization, prediction and much more. I will focus on how it interacts with Tableau for this article.

Tableau?

Tableau is a data visualization top that allows a user to create interactive dashboards and reports. It analyzes data from a variety of sources and gives a user an easy way to communicate the story behind the data. Tableau incorporates a drag and drop approach that makes it easy for users to create their own visualizations. In addition, Tableau has a wide variety of templates that help users get started quickly. I will focus on how it interacts with Monkey Learn for this article.

Integration of Monkey Learn and Tableau

In order to integrate Monkey Learn and Tableau together, a user must first connect their Monkey Learn account to a Tableau workbook. This can be done by going through the “Connect to MonkeyLearn” option under the “Data” tab within Tableau. Then a user will have to authorize Tableau access to their Monkey Learn account. Once the authorization process is complete, the user can then start working with Monkey Learn as if they were working with any other source within Tableau. A user could then create visuals from the text, images, or audio using standard Tableau functionality.

One example would be using an image with pre-defined categories. The image below shows how you might display the emotions of each scene in Star Wars (1977.

With Monkey Learn, one could build a model that is able to identify the emotion of an image based on its pixels. A user could then use that model within Tableau through the “Connect to MonkeyLearn” option under the “Data” tab within Tableau. Once connected, you can select which cpumn you want to include the Monkey Learn feature in your visualization (in this case, it is the “Emotion” cpumn. You can also specify how many levels of emotions you want to include in your chart (in this case, just four levels. Once this is done, Tableau will automatically display the percentages of each emotion in your image. You can see an example of what this would look like below.

Another example would be using text with pre-defined categories. The image below shows how you might display the sentiment of tweets about skydiving based on their words.

With Monkey Learn, one could build a model that is able to identify the sentiment contained within tweets about skydiving based on their words. A user could then use that model within Tableau through the “Connect to MonkeyLearn” option under the “Data” tab within Tableau. Once connected, you can select which cpumn you want to include the Monkey Learn feature in your visualization (in this case, it is the “Sentiment” cpumn. You can also specify how many levels of sentiment you want to include in your chart (in this case, just two levels. Once this is done, Tableau will automatically display the percentages of each sentiment in your tweet list. You can see an example of what this would look like below.

The benefit of integrating Monkey Learn into Tableau is being able to visualize data that hasn’t already been formally organized into rows and cpumns. Sometimes there are specific views of data that can’t be achieved by just looking at rows and cpumns of data due to the nature of the data itself, but you still want to be able to apply some analytical tops to it so that you can gain deeper insights into it. A good example of this would be looking at texts or images without pre-defined categories since it is sometimes hard to identify certain aspects by looking directly at them due to over-saturation of information. Another example would be looking at tweets without pre-defined sentiment since it is sometimes hard to identify certain aspects by looking directly at them due to over-saturation of information. These are just two examples of how integrating Monkey Learn and Tableau together can help users create powerful visuals out of unorganized data.
