MongoDB is an open-source document-oriented NoSQL database software. It is developed by MongoDB Inc. and is free to use and available for commercial purposes under the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL.

MongoDB is similar to other NoSQL databases in that it stores data in flexible, JSON-like documents. It can be either run on a single server or on a cluster of servers, with the latter making it more resilient to failure. The database uses a document as its main model, with dynamic schemas and automatic indexing that allows for free-form queries. The name “Mongo” comes from humongous, which was a term coined in the 1960s by one of the founders of System Development Corporation, who worked on the Multics project. The term has been applied by analogy to large amounts of data ever since. One of the founders of MongoDB Inc., Eliot Horowitz, said that the company’s original name, 10gen, was not meant to imply that 10GB would be the upper limit of the product; rather, he said, it was supposed to reflect the company’s mission to empower developers to build huge things.
