Integration of Mixpanel and Databox

Mixpanel

Databox

Mixpanel is a web and mobile analytics platform that helps companies understand how customers use their product. It was founded in 2009 by Mixpanel Inc. In 2012, the company raised $13.5 million in Series B funding from Sequoia Capital to expand its team and improve its product.

In 2016, Mixpanel acquired Uber’s data analytics team to help clients improve their mobile and web user experience. As of 2017, Mixpanel has more than 100 clients including Airbnb, Box, Evernote, Foursquare, GoPro, Instacart, LinkedIn, Lyft, Netflix, Shopify, Stripe, TaskRabbit, Yelp, and Zendesk.

According to Mixpanel’s website, it provides four main features:

  • Funnels
  • Segments
  • Cohorts
  • Event tracking

Funnels help track users’ journey through a specific flow or set of steps on a website or app. A funnel visualizes high-level data such as new users, lost users and total users at each step along the way so that you can easily identify which step is causing most problems and troubleshoot accordingly. For example, a funnel may show that a large number of users are completing step 1 but abandoning in step 2. In this case, the problem may be due to poorly designed copy or a confusing form layout. While Funnels can be used for any type of event tracking, they are especially useful for ecommerce sites that want to see where their site might be losing sales. You can create funnels to track orders, signups, login information and more.

Segments are a way to limit what data you look at so that you can focus on only specific aspects (or segments. of your data. For example, if you want to see how your mobile app is doing compared to your web app, you can create a segment for “Mobile App Users” and compare them against “Web App Users.” Segmentation gives you more power over your data and allows you to find patterns and gain deeper insights into the behavior of your users. Segments are also useful for comparing two different sets of users or two different events (for example, users who completed a specific action versus users who didn’t. Segments help you formulate questions about your data so that you can run tests and make decisions based on real data rather than hunches or best guesses.

Cohorts are groups of users who experienced an event within a specific time period (for instance, users who created accounts during a certain month. They allow you to see how changes in one aspect of your business affects another aspect of your business. You can compare cohorts over time to see how the behavior of one cohort changed over time relative to other cohorts. For example, if you want to see how your user retention improved over time after introducing a new feature, you can compare the cohort of new users who signed up after the feature launched with the cohort of new users who signed up before the feature launched. Cohorts also allow you to see how similar users behave relative to each other so that you can understand why some segments behave differently than others. Cohorts can also be extremely helpful when determining how much revenue you should be charging per user since you can compare the cohort of high-value users to the cohort of low-value users and determine whether or not the value of your product justifies the price you’re charging per user.

Event tracking allows you to track actions that happen on your site or app. For example, if a user signs up for your service using a credit card, you would create an event called “Card Payment Complete” and link this event to the user by email address or user ID field (this would allow you to see all subsequent activity related to that user. Events are often used in conjunction with funnels to track specific metrics such as bounce rate or time spent on site or app and then linked back to individual events to see what caused the drop in these metrics. For example, if you notice that the bounce rate on your site increased after a particular event was added (such as adding a pop-up that asked for payment information), then you would know that people don’t like seeing this pop-up and it negatively impacts their experience of the site.
