Miro was created by Josh Russell in 2003 under the name Democracy Player. It was released to the public under the name Miro Player in March 2005. Since its initial release, Miro has been downloaded over two million times. Miro is open source software released under the GPLv2 license.

Miro supports many file formats, including AVI, MPEG, MP4, WMV, AVCHD, Ogg Theora, WebM, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, and more. Miro also supports subtitles in many languages.

Miro Player – is a browser plugin that can be installed on Firefox or Google Chrome for watching videos on Miro. It comes preinstalled on many Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and is also available for Mac OS X. There is also a standalone app for Windows XP/Vista/7, but is not available for Mac OS X. While most of the Miro Player’s functions do not require a plugin for playback, some features such as adding videos to a playlist will not work without it installed.
