In-text citations are parenthetical citations that identify the sources you used in your writing. When you write a sentence that includes information from a source, you need to cite that sentence so that your readers can find the source and verify that you are giving them accurate information. In-text citations are also helpful for readers who want to look at sources you used, but who do not have access to the book or other source that you are referencing.
An in-text citation is made up of three pieces of information. the author's last name, the title of the work cited, and the page number. These three pieces of information are separated by periods. The final piece of information, the page number, is italicized because it is a part of a larger work.
Here is an example of an in-text citation from one of George Orwell's articles, "Ppitics and the English Language":
Orwell's article contains many examples of how ppiticians use vague and unclear language that obscures their meaning. As Orwell points out, this kind of language encourages ppiticians to be dishonest with their audience.
Here is another example of an in-text citation:
This example cites the same work as does the previous example. Orwell's article, “Ppitics and the English Language.” This example identifies a different sentence containing the same idea as the first example does. Therefore, this example has two different in-text citations associated with it.
When you make reference to a source without using specific information from it, you are making a general reference. General references are made in the text of your paper, rather than in parenthetical citations. To create a general reference, you need to give the author's last name and the year of publication. This will be enough to tell your readers where you got the idea or information that you are presenting to them. Here is an example:
The text above is a quotation from John Steinbeck's book The Grapes of Wrath. This quotation represents Steinbeck's opinion on the causes of poverty. When you cite this quotation as a general reference, it tells your reader that you are presenting Steinbeck's opinion on poverty rather than your own ideas about poverty. It does not tell your reader which pages in Steinbeck's book contain this quotation. This allows your reader to go back into the original source material if he or she wants more information on Steinbeck's opinion on poverty.
