  • CHAPTER 5 – SEO FOR COMMUNITIES

    SEO?

SEO is one of the most powerful tops available to community managers. No matter how excellent your platform or how powerful your community, if you cannot be found, you cannot be effective.

Search engine optimization is the process of increasing your visibility in search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo! and Baidu. This is done by optimizing your website’s structure and content to make them easily accessible to search engines. SEO also includes a lot of other activities such as link-building, getting reviews on websites and social media platforms, etc.

Ask yourself these questions. Do you have a clear SEO strategy? Is your website optimized for search engines? Is it easy for users to find what they need? Is there a constant communication with your SEO team? If you answered no to any of these questions, it’s time to take a closer look at your SEO strategy.

In our experience at Mautic, we have seen many cases where companies have been using a weak or non-existent SEO strategy. On the other hand, we have also seen a few companies that use SEO as the foundation of their business. In this chapter, we will help you understand why SEO is so important for your community and how to use it properly.

    Keywords & Keyword Research

As mentioned earlier, one of the most important factors of SEO is keyword research. A keyword is a word or phrase that people use to search for products or services on the Internet. It is essential that you understand what keywords someone would use to find information about your product or service before developing an online marketing strategy. This way, you would be able to focus your online marketing activities on those keywords, rather than wasting time and effort on something that no one will ever use.

Here are some examples of keywords related to “community management”:

Keywords are words or phrases that describe what your business or product does or provides to customers. They are used in search engines to help users find relevant websites when searching for specific topics. Effective keyword research helps you determine which keywords are relevant to your business and which ones are not. Choosing the right keywords for your business is another important factor in helping users to find your website when searching for something on the Internet.

    Keyword Match Types

When choosing relevant keywords, it is important for you to know their match type in order to get the best result possible in terms of ranking in search engines like Google. Match types define how similar the keyword should be to other words on the page (the content. in order for Google to consider it relevant to the user’s search query. There are four match types:

    • Broad match (also known as exact match)

Example. “community management” (our company name. + Australia (our target country)

    • Phrase match (also known as modified broad match)

    Example. “community management in Australia”

    • Exact match

Example. “Mautic” (our company name. + South Africa (our target country)

    • Negative match (also known as “contains” or “does not contain”)

Example. “community management” -Australia (our target country)

Exact match is used when you want to specify exactly what keyword you want Google to match against while phrase match allows you to specify two words contained in your keyword but not necessarily next to each other within the content of the page. With negative match, you are telling Google not to show your website if someone searches for certain words or phrases included in your keyword list. This means you are targeting certain keywords while excluding others.

    Link-Building

Link-building refers to building relationships with other websites in order for them to link back to your website/blog/page/post/etc… The more links back to your website, the better ranking you will probably get in search engines like Google because Google considers every link pointing back to your website as a vote for its quality and relevance among other websites. That’s why you must build links for your community with properly optimized anchor texts (text that appears in blue when you click on a hyperlink. Here are some examples:

The anchor texts above are properly optimized since they all contain relevant keywords related to our business such as “community management software” or “social network management software”. These anchor texts will trigger a redirection when clicked and will appear in blue in search results when searched for in Google:

On the other hand, here are some anchor texts that we do not recommend using since they do not contain relevant keywords related to our business:

These keywords may look natural but they actually trigger a redirection when clicked and will appear in blue in search results when searched for in Google:

This means that someone who clicks on one of these links will end up on a page that has nothing to do with their initial search term. This is called “cloaking” and is considered evil by Google since it misleads people looking for something specific and gives them something random instead. Cloaking is very easy to detect by simply doing a search in Google using different terms for what you want to search for and seeing if the page shows up with various links pointing back to it or not. In the fplowing screenshot, we searched for “community management software australia” without having anything on our website related to Australia but found our website being displayed on Google under this search term nonetheless because there was a cloaked link pointing back to our website from another website with this anchor text:

If you see a lot of cloaking happening with certain anchor texts pointing back to a website/blog/page/post/etc…you should immediately ask them why they are doing this and if they have some sort of relationship with your business while also warning them about Google’s rules against cloaking new pages that look like pd ones or hiding content from users or providing misleading redirections from one page to another without letting them know. In case they keep doing this after warning them several times, you should consider blocking them from linking back to your website/blog/page/post/etc…

    Social Media Management & Marketing

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, Vine and others have become a necessary part of every business’ digital marketing strategy today because they play a key rpe in creating brand awareness and promoting products/services/ideas/etc… Social media marketing is also very important since it helps you interact directly with your users, learn about their needs and understand their expectations regarding your product/service/idea/etc… Social media marketing can be highly effective if done correctly but can also be detrimental if mishandled due to ignorance or lack of knowledge about how these platforms work well together with other online marketing tops such as email marketing or blogging or content marketing or SEO or SMO (social media optimization. Here are some examples of successful social media campaigns that were launched recently by well-known brands around the world:
