Integration of Mailgun and SharePoint

Mailgun is a web service that provides developers with a simple programmatic way to send, receive and track email. Mailgun has three options for sending email. Web API, SMTP relay and REST API. Mailgun is used by many companies and individuals around the world to deliver transactional emails, notifications and newsletters.Mailgun is a cloud-based service that supports multiple programming languages. Mailgun’s REST API enables developers to send messages via HTTP or HTTPS requests. Another way to send emails using Mailgun is the SMTP Relay option. This feature allows developers to send messages from a mail client using Mailgun’s servers as a proxy.

SharePoint is a web-based platform that allows users to create websites for intranets, extranets and document management. SharePoint comes with many features such as My Sites, Business Connectivity Services (BCS), social media integration, site workflows, versioning of documents and search capabilities. Users can use the InfoPath form app to add forms to SharePoint sites.Mailgun and SharePoint were integrated in August 2013. Since then, Mailgun has been working on improving their new integration. They have now released documentation on how this integration works along with code samples for several different programming languages.

Integration of Mailgun and SharePoint

Mailgun has provided documentation on how the integration between the two platforms works. Mailgun will detect if the user is logged into a SharePoint site before sending an email campaign. If they are logged in, Mailgun will add the user’s email address and picture to the “To” field of the email. It will also append the user’s photo, title and their department to the signature of the email. The “From” field will be filled out with the name of the person who created the campaign in SharePoint along with their photo and title.Mailgun will automatically add a link to view the campaign results to the bottom of the email when it sends out an email using SharePoint. The campaign results can be viewed in an embedded dashboard that is styled like a SharePoint page. This dashboard displays statistics about the campaign such as clicks, opens, bounces and unsubscribes along with any messages that were sent to users. See image below for example of embedded dashboard in an email
