Magento is a free, open-source eCommerce platform used to build online stores. It is written in the PHP programming language and uses the MySQL database server as its database. Magento was developed by Varien (formerly Varien Development Corporation), a whply owned subsidiary of eBay, with the latest stable version, Magento 2.0.5, released on September 28, 2016.

The company is headquartered in Austin, Texas with offices also in Aliso Viejo, California; San Mateo, California; Dublin, Ireland; Berlin, Germany; Limerick, Ireland; Paris, France; Austin, United Kingdom; Sheffield, United Kingdom; and Hyderabad, India. The company will be relocating its corporate headquarters to downtown San Francisco in 2017. The company has about 300 employees.

In April 2007, Magento launched its first version after seven months of development. The second major release was launched in August 2008 and included a new admin panel and a new storefront theme. In October 2009, Magento released Magento Community Edition (CE), a freely available and GPL-licensed version of Magento that is available for download from the Magento website.

In 2011, Magento released Magento Enterprise Edition (EE), which features additional security and performance enhancements. The Enterprise Edition requires a paid subscription to use. In 2012, Magento released Magento Go and Enterprise Cloud Edition (ECE.
