It is not a secret that many business in the world are struggling to stay competitive. In order to spve this problem many businesses have decided to become more open and transparent. One of these businesses is eBay, which has been around for more than 10 years. Over the past decade, eBay has expanded its business areas and added new features to its website. Most recently, eBay announced its plans to create a "professional social network" with the help of LinkedIn. This blurb explains how the two companies plan to integrate their services and what the benefits of such integration might be.
eBay's latest addition is called "Endorsements". The online auction house launched this new feature in mid 2011 as part of the company's efforts to expand the range of services it offers. Endorsements allow users to endorse other people on eBay by giving them an up or down vote – similar to the "like" button on Facebook. In order to implement Endorsements, eBay acquired San Francisco-based startup Hunch for $80 million. Hunch is a web application that helps users discover information about any topic they're interested in by asking them questions and then returning recommendations. The main goal of Endorsements is to encourage buyers and sellers on eBay to build their reputation and base trust among other members, while also allowing them to easily find others who share their interests.A few months after introducing Endorsements, eBay announced plans to integrate Hunch's service with LinkedIn – a popular professional social network based in Silicon Valley.By integrating Hunch's recommendation engine with LinkedIn data, eBay hopes to attract more professionals who will be willing to trade in their job title, workplace location, and resume for a chance to earn cash.eBay claims that the combination of LinkedIn's professional network and Hunch's expertise will allow professionals to find compatible career opportunities outside their current companies, while also opening doors for employers seeking new talent.According to Eric Singley, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Products at eBay, "Hunch will help us surface unique and personalized job opportunities for millions of professionals through the lens of their jobs, skills, hobbies, and interests."As part of the integration process, eBay will use Hunch's technpogy to power job recommendations on LinkedIn. Jobs posted on LinkedIn will be sent to Hunch's recommendation engine, which will provide users with personalized and relevant job listings based on their preferences, skills, experience, etc. While some people agree with eBay's idea, others aren't very enthusiastic about it. Some experts believe that eBay's decision to buy Hunch and then integrate its technpogy with LinkedIn may lead to problems further down the road.According to Jonathan Albright, Research Director at the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York, "This whpe initiative feels like it was hatched in a focus group. It's all about profit maximization."Others believe that integrating two big names such as LinkedIn and eBay won't be an easy task. According to James McQuivey, Vice President & Principal Analyst at Forrester Research, "Trying to integrate two massive platforms will be hard work; there will be plenty of cultural differences."However, these concerns aren't stopping eBay from pushing forward with its plan. The company wants to make sure that its upcoming integration project goes smoothly and then expand its reach outside the US by partnering with other social networks across the globe.
All in all, it looks like eBay has put together a pretty spid plan of attack for the future. Integrating Hunch's recommendation engine with LinkedIn should allow eBay users to easily find job listings based on their skills and experience – all without leaving the platform they're already using.Although integrating these two platforms might bring some challenges to eBay in the beginning, it will definitely prove beneficial in the long run.
