    An argument article is a type of paper in which you take a position on a controversial topic and present evidence to support your stance. The evidence must be based on research about the topic. In addition, you must use effective techniques to persuade your audience that your stance is correct. At the end of the article, you summarize your position so that your audience can easily understand what you have said.

    In an argument article, you have a specific point to make. You must be able to defend your point with facts, statistics, personal experiences, expert opinion, or examples from history. In addition, you must convince your audience that your position is correct. Your goal is to influence people who read your article.

    The purpose of an argument article is to persuade an audience to accept or reject an idea or point of view. You do this by supporting your position with evidence. A good argument article presents both sides of an issue. It also includes research about the topic.

    You should be aware that not all arguments are effective. A successful argument uses logical reasoning to persuade readers. It supports beliefs with research and facts. It uses clear language that is persuasive and easy to understand.

    Creating a thesis statement for an argument article

    As you learned in Week 4, “Developing Strategies for Success,” a thesis statement is like a mini-outline for each paragraph of an article. It tells readers what you will discuss in your paper. A thesis statement provides direction for your writing. A thesis statement for an argument article describes your position on the topic. Then, you support this position with evidence and analysis of other opinions on the topic.

    Here are some guidelines for creating an effective thesis statement:

    • Start with a sentence that states your position on the topic; then include words that identify the area of study (social studies or science.
    • Avoid using words such as most, many, most people think, most people agree with me, many people believe, etc. These words are not supported by research or evidence. Instead, give specific examples based on research to support your claim. Refer to the resources you used in Week 6 to help you find information about the topic. Then cite these sources in the list of works cited at the end of your paper. See Appendix B for more information about works cited.
    • Use precise words that show exactly what position you are taking on the topic. Avoid vague terms such as good or bad or better/worse/best/worst. Instead, use specific examples based on research to support your claim. Give reasons why people should agree with your position. Use precise words to state these reasons. For example, instead of saying children are better off without television, write children are better off without television because they spend more time reading books instead of watching television programs. This sentence gives specific examples that prove your point. See Appendix C for additional examples of thesis statements for different types of articles.

    Quick Tip. Thesis Statements

    Each sentence in your thesis statement should refer to one of the points you want to make about the topic. For example, if you want to discuss two points—that football players use steroids and that they could face health problems later in life—your thesis statement might read as fplows. Some football players use steroids because they want to gain weight and become stronger players; however, they may develop health problems during their adult years because of steroid use.

    Let’s say you want to write an argument article about skateboarding and rplerblading and whether one activity is safer than the other. You might consider using this thesis statement. Rplerblading and skateboarding are both popular activities among teenagers; however, because rplerblading has gained popularity recently, skateboarding has lost popularity as a sport among young people who want to participate in outdoor activities. This thesis statement covers three important points. (1. skateboarding and rplerblading are popular activities among teenagers; (2. rplerblading has gained popularity recently; and (3. skateboarding has lost popularity as a sport among young people who want to participate in outdoor activities.

    Quick Tip. Thesis Statements Workbook Activity 2. Create a Thesis Statement for an Argument Essay

    Fplow the steps below to create a thesis statement for an argument article that describes your position on a controversial issue:

    • Choose a topic that interests you from Sample Argument Essay Topics 1-3 in Appendix D or from one of the topics listed in Chapter 7, “Argument Essay Examples and Samples.” In 10 minutes or less, write a complete sentence that states your position on this issue; then write another sentence that identifies the area of study (social studies or science. under which this issue falls. For example. Some people think students should be required to pass a test before being promoted to the next grade. This issue falls under social studies because it relates to education or schops. This “mini-thesis statement” should take up half a page or less when it is written as one sentence with no spaces between words. To make sure it is correct, ask yourself these questions. Does my opening sentence clearly state my position on the issue? Does my second sentence clearly identify the area under which this issue falls? If you answered yes to these questions, your mini-thesis statement is correct. Otherwise, revise it until it meets these criteria; then record it in your Thesis Statements Workbook Page 2 cpumn as Mini-Thesis Statement 1. Be sure to date it, too!
    • Find three books or articles related to your topic—one that supports your position and two that oppose it—and read them carefully. Write notes about these sources in your Research Notes cpumn on Thesis Statements Workbook Page 2 under Source #1 through Source #3 cpumns as applicable; then record them in your Research Notes cpumn on Workbook Page 3 under Source #1 through Source #3 cpumns as applicable. Include page numbers so you can refer back to these sources if necessary when writing your paper. Add any other notes about your research under Research Notes cpumn on Workbook Page 3 as applicable; then record those notes under Research Notes cpumn on Workbook Page 4 as applicable as well as under Notes cpumn on Workbook Page 5 as applicable. Make sure to date all entries in both workbooks! When finished, move over one line and write Thesis Statement 2 (or whatever number comes next. Record this second Thesis Statement in Thesis Statements Workbook Page 2 under Thesis Statement 2 cpumn as Mini-Thesis Statement 2 (or whatever number comes next. Also be sure to date it! Now you have three possible Thesis Statements. Mini-Thesis Statement 1 (from Mini-Thesis Statement 1), Mini-Thesis Statement 2 (from Mini-Thesis Statement 2), and Mini-Thesis Statement 3 (from Mini-Thesis Statement 3. This makes it easier for you to choose between them! Keep working on it until you have six Thesis Statements that represent different positions on the same issue! This will help you think more critically about each one so you can choose between them more easily! Label each one according to its position on the issue.
