Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS. is a hosted message queuing service for decoupling components of distributed applications by messaging them instead of calling them directly. The service facilitates reliable communication between computer systems by storing messages in queues; their contents are accessed by means of client libraries. A set of programs may then remove messages from the queue (consume them), process them, and then optionally delete them. This works well when processes are available at given points in time, but not necessarily at every point in time. For example, an order-processing system might send messages to be processed by a warehouse-management system. The warehouse might take some time to process the message before deleting it from the queue. During this time period other orders might be placed which also need to be processed by the warehouse management system. Therefore, the warehouse management system must continue to consume messages while it is processing other messages. To prevent the warehouse management system from being overwhelmed while processing a batch of orders, you can configure it to process only a certain number of messages per second (or per minute or per hour.
