Let’s start with some definitions from Wikipedia:
“Kanban is a lean manufacturing philosophy and method for supply chain management, introduced by Toyota in the 1950s. The kanban method of material handling is derived from the Japanese word meaning “signboard” or “billboard”.
Kanban, in the form of cards bearing part numbers, can be used to signal the need for a certain part and indicate that a parts bin has been depleted below a predetermined level. In this way, kanban can be seen as a type of visual management, which is an important component of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement.”
