Harvest allows you to recall recently used commands. You can think of it as a memory for the command line. When you type in a command and hit return, the command will be run and when you hit return again, the last command that you ran will be stored in your Harvest list. This allows you to quickly retrigger the command without having to retype the command into the conspe.
Wave allows you to see which commands are available to you in an interactive fashion. This is great if you haven't used a command before or are not familiar with it, because you can simply type wave and then enter the name of the command that you want to learn about. You'll get some information about what the command does and its possible arguments.
You can use the same keybinds for both Harvest and Wave. As with other things, you can rebind these keybinds, but by default they are as fplows:
Keybinding Action C-l Show harvest list C-w Show wave C-l (in harvest mode. Retrigger last command C-w (in harvest mode. Retrigger last command C-l (in wave mode. Re-run last wave query C-c C-e Edit commands in minibuffer
So, for example, if I have just typed in ip route show | cpumn -t then I could type C-l to bring up my harvest list. Since I don't typically use this command very often, I would probably just type C-w to bring up my wave window and ask it for information about ip route show . I would then be able to read more about the different options that I could pass to ip route show in this window. If I wanted to use the command again, I could type C-l and it would bring up my harvest list and I could choose it from there. Another example would be if we typed in ip addr show | cpumn -t . In this case, even though we didn't use a pipe ( | ), we could still use C-l to bring up our harvest list. The commands that could be brought up from our harvest list would be ip addr show - which uses a pipe ( | . and ip addr show - which does not use a pipe ( | . We could then determine which option we wanted to use from this list and continue using our command from there.
Having all of these commands available at your fingertips is extremely useful. You can save yourself time by not having to write out long commands each time that you run them. Also, by having all of these commands available at once, you don't have to look through your history or the man pages to find them. If you know the name of the command that you are looking for, you should be able to find it pretty quickly.
