In this paper, I will examine the similarities and differences between Habitica and Wave. Specifically, I will analyze how each top functions individually and how their integration can add value to their individual users.
In order to understand their comparative benefits, one must first understand how each top functions independently. Habitica helps users create a list of tasks that they want to accomplish. These tasks are called Habits in Habitica, and users build a “To-Do List” within the application. Each activity a user wants to schedule is added to this list, allowing them to divide their activities into easy-to-manage chunks. Users are given points for each task they complete, which they can use to buy rewards within the application. This system helps users form new habits by rewarding them for doing something they would otherwise consider mundane. Additionally, the application provides users with an opportunity to set goals for themselves. If a user has a goal outside of the application that they want to accomplish, they can link it to Habitica. The application will then track how often they do this goal-related task in the same way that it tracks their habit-related tasks. This feature allows users to have an overarching view of their goals instead of only being able to keep track of what is being done in the immediate moment. Finally, users can connect Habitica with other applications so that the data they enter is shared across multiple platforms. They can also share their character with other players so that group members can see their progress with specific goals.
Wave helps users manage their tasks by creating different lists, or WAVES, that they can work on at any time. Users are able to see an overview of all of the WAVES they have, as well as click on any individual wave to see all of its components on one screen. Users can set reminders on WAVES so that they are notified when it is time to work on them again. They can also create multiple notifications within one WAVES if they want to see reminders on more than one occasion. To make sure that tasks are completed, users are able to attach deadlines to each element of their list. If an activity isn’t completed by the deadline, it is displayed in red on the WAVES page; this allows users to see at a glance which tasks need to be completed immediately if they want them to be considered “done” at all. Finally, users are able to invite friends who use Wave so that they can see each other’s progress on common goals.
