    • First example (Main Point. Why we care about the first example)
    • Second example (Main Point. Why we care about the second example)

  • Background (Main Point. Give an overview of the topic)
    • Definition of Terms (Main Point. Define all the terms used in the article)

Figure 5-3 shows you how outlining works. As you can see, it looks like a tree, with a main point at the top, and a subpoint below it. The next level down has a subpoint, and so on. All the little circles are called boxes. An article will have one or more boxes for each main point, and under each box there will be a number of subpoints. When you write your article, you fill in what goes into each box as you write your article—just as you would fill in a table to describe a pie. This way, even if you don’t know exactly what you want to say, you have a clear idea from your outline as to what will go into each box. For instance, you might have a main point, Argument 1, which leads to three subpoints, A, B, and C. You might have a second main point, Argument 2, which leads to two subpoints, D and E. Your outline might look something like this:

    Figure 5-3. Outline structure

This is just an example—your outline doesn’t have to look exactly like this. The important things are that there are main points and subpoints, and that all the subpoints stem from a main point. This organization lets you think about your article as being made up of smaller parts that fit together to form the whpe article. It also helps you plan out your article; for instance, after you write out your outline, you might decide that you need another subpoint under “B”—say, Background (subpoint 3)—because it gives more information about your first example. It is very possible that once you start writing your article, you will not keep your outline perfectly; however, having some sense of an outline gives you an idea of where you are headed.

    Note

When you begin outlining, make sure that your outline is complete; don’t leave any blanks unless they are intentionally left blank because they will distract readers away from your argument. If you don’t know how to respond to something, then skip it for now and come back to it later—you’ll figure it out eventually!

Once you have your outline completed, fplow these steps to write your article:

    • Start by writing the introduction paragraph of your article—this should be one of the first paragraphs you write so that you can refer to it throughout your article as you build on your argument. Your introduction paragraph should be able to stand on its own as an effective introduction to the topic. Make sure that this introductory paragraph has all five Ws included! This is an indication that you wrote this paragraph last because it is meant specifically to introduce your topic for this assignment. Be sure to include an explanation of what you are going to do in your article. Do not make any specific claims or predictions at this point; rather leave room for yourself to develop those ideas later in your article. Make sure to leave room for transition sentences between each main argument—these transitions will help show the relationship between all the different parts of your article. Here is an example of an introduction paragraph for an article on any topic related to GoToTraining or ShipRocket:

Now that I have introduced the concept of training, I will explain how our company uses GoToTraining online training software to train all new employees on our products used in our business processes. These employees are located all over the country without geographical limitations on their training schedule because of our company’s use of ShipRocket web conferencing software for remote training sessions with employees across the country.

    • Now look at your outline and start filling in all the boxes with content. Remember that each box needs to have a complete sentence—this makes it easier for readers to understand what each part contributes toward supporting or refuting your claim. You may decide that some content should be placed in more than one place in your article—this is fine, but be sure that when you refer back to something later in your article that you explain why it is relevant in more than one place. You should also check back on whether each piece of content fplows logically from each other part—you may need to reorder things if they seem out of order or awkward when you read them back to yourself after writing them down on paper. Here is an example of how an article fplowing this outline might appear after filling in all the boxes in each box with content:

GoToTraining online training software is used by my company for all new employees who learn about our business processes by watching videos specifically created for our company’s computer system along with written instructions on how to perform tasks using our complex computer system in order to help them become productive within our company quickly upon starting work for us in all departments across the country in any department or location due to our company’s use of ShipRocket web conferencing software for conducting remote training sessions with employees located anywhere in the country when needed when conducting these training sessions outside normal business hours so no time is lost during normal business hours when using these tops our company has created for conducting online training sessions with employees located anywhere in the country thereby saving money on travel expenses by not having to fly people around the country for training sessions saving money by reducing overhead costs associated with running our business by allowing employees to take their training sessions whenever they want even if they are working overtime at home during normal business hours when they get home from work outside normal business hours due to our company’s use of ShipRocket web conferencing software allowing employees to take their training sessions whenever they want even if they are working overtime at home during normal business hours when they get home from work outside normal business hours due to our company’s use of ShipRocket web conferencing software allowing employees taking part in these training sessions outside normal business hours when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after work when they get home to work outside normal business hours after work when they get home from work outside normal business hours after
