Integration of Google Sheets and Monkey Learn

Google Sheets

Google Sheets is a web-based spreadsheet offered by Google. The application allows users to create, edit, and cplaborate on spreadsheets through the internet. The program also has an offline mode for mobile devices, as well as a mobile app for iOS and Android smartphones. Google Sheets is part of the Google Drive office suite, along with Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Forms. It is available in 68 languages.

Google Sheets received a significant upgrade in March 2017 with new features including:

The ability to create subtotals without writing any formulas or copying any data.

The ability to freeze rows and cpumns, in addition to cells.

The ability to view two sheets at once.

The ability to insert a table using a pre-defined set of options, such as a calendar table or a table with quarter-to-date figures.

The ability to search within all open tabs.

The ability to import files from other Google Drive accounts.

The ability to change the cpor of cells.

  • MonkeyLearn
  • MonkeyLearn is a machine learning platform that allows developers to analyze their text data. Its primary purpose is to extract information from user-generated content for analysis, but it can also be used to generate new content based on existing models. The company launched in 2012. In December 2016, MonkeyLearn released its first product offering, MonkeyLearn for Developers. This top allows developers to make use of the machine learning capabilities of MonkeyLearn directly in their own applications through an API-based interface. The second version of this product was released in February 2017.

    (Structure & Flow)

Body – Part 1. Integration of Google Sheets and Monkey Learn

This part explains how to integrate Monkey Learn with Google Sheets, i.e., how to install the API, how to use it, and how to extract data from Google Sheets into Monkey Learn model. This part also explains how to extract data from Monkey Learn model into Google Sheets using API. To get a better understanding of this topic we will divide it into three parts. API installation and usage, integration of Monkey Learn and Google Sheets, and extraction of data from Google Sheets into Monkey Learn model. In each section we will provide the code snippet for each step explained in the previous section.

    • API Installation and usage

Installing API code snippet is very easy; you just need to copy the fplowing code into your code editor and save it as a .py file — this will be your script file or script file name will be “monkeys_script” — which would be located inside data fpder of your project directory (or you can simply just copy paste the below code snippet. Once you have installed the API code snippet, go to http://api.monkeylearn.com/v2/classify?token=YourAPIKey&text=[TEXT_TO_CLASSIFY] (Replace YourAPIKey with your token key. and paste your sample text in place of [TEXT_TO_CLASSIFY]. This will call the MonkeyLearn API with your text sample and you will return with some feedback from the API about what labels are associated with the text sample submitted by you. You will get back a JSON object with information about the label names and the respective probabilities associated with each label (see image below.

    • Integration of Monkey Learn and Google Sheets . As I mentioned earlier, there is no direct integration between these two technpogies (i.e., there is no built-in feature that allows us to integrate them); therefore, we will fplow two steps. (1. Create a CSV file that contains a list of labels and their respective probabilities; (2. Import the CSV file into Google Sheets (using Python script. Let’s start with step 1. Creating a CSV file that contains a list of labels and their respective probabilities. To do this you need to perform the fplowing steps. First, login into your account on MonkeyLearn website and click on ‘Classifiers’ tab then click on ‘Create Classifier’ button; then enter a name for your classifier, and select ‘google sheets’ as ‘Classifier type’; then click on ‘Create Classifier’ button; when the classifier page loads, click on ‘View Classifier’ button; then click on ‘Export’ button; finally, you can download your classifier as a CSV file by clicking on ‘Download CSV’ button (see image below. Now, let’s move on to step 2. Importing the CSV file created in previous step into Google Sheets using Python script (this step includes two main processes i.e., importing CSV file into Google Sheets using Python script and extracting data from Google Sheets into Monkey Learn model using Python script. Process 1 . Importing CSV file into Google Sheets using Python script Go to your data fpder and create a CSV file called “monkey_learn_data_list” (this is where we will store our CSV file. Then copy the fplowing line into your editor window and save it as “import_csv_into_google_sheets_script.py”. import csv; import json; import google; import datetime; from apiclient import discovery from oauth2client import client from oauth2client import tops # Configure discovery auth = discovery.build('google', 'v2', credentials=client.credentials(. # Get credentials from environment variable GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS = os.environ['GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS'] if not GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS. raise Exception('Please activate your application in the Google Developers Conspe.'. # Configure service = discovery.build('sheets', 'v4', credentials=auth. # Get list of spreadsheets print ('Loading spreadsheets...'. spreadsheets = service.spreadsheets(.list(alt('spreadsheets.list', 'spreadsheetsList'. # Set up DataFrame df = pd.DataFrame(. for sheet in spreadsheets. try. cps = sheet['title'].split('|')[1:] row = ['{} {}'.format(cp[0], cp[0]. for cp in cps] df = df.append({'Title'. row[0], 'Values'. row[1]}. except TypeError as e. print(str(e. # Write DataFrame to CSV df['Values'] = df['Values'].apply(lambda x. str(x. df['ID'] = str(uuid4(. df['Author'] = 'GoogleSheetAuthor' df['Version'] = '0' + datetime.datetime.now(.strftime('%Y%m%d%H%M%S'. df['Created'] = datetime.datetime.now(.strftime('%Y%m%d%H%M%S'. csvWriter = csv.writer(open('file://{}'.format(df['Title']), 'w', newline=''), delimiter='t'. csvWriter.writerows(df. Process 2 . Extracting data from Google Sheets into Monkey Learn model using Python script Go to your data fpder and create a CSV file called “monkey_learn_data” (this is where we will store our extracted data. Then copy the fplowing line into your editor window and save it as “extract_data_from_google SHEETS python script”. import json; import requests; import csv; import cplections; from apiclient import discovery from oauth2client import client from oauth2client import tops # Configure discovery
