Google has added a new option to the developer conspe that allows developers to quickly integrate their application with Google CloudPrint. They no longer need to build code to handle printing directly, they just need to call the API directly. This will make it easier for developers who use Google CloudPrint as their backend for printing to offer the ability to print from any device. Developers who do not want to use Google CloudPrint can still use the existing API, and it will continue to work as expected. The addition gives developers the opportunity to let users print from any device using Google CloudPrint without having to build a complicated backend system themselves. With Google CloudPrint anyone can print from any Android phone, iPhone, iPad, Chromebook or Windows PC without installing software or drivers on the devices. The Chrome Print Service is built into the latest version of Chrome and works out of the box with printers that have cloud-enabled firmware. If your printer doesn’t support cloud printing you can get an adapter or converter from our partners at Cortado Labs or from Google Play. In addition, the mDNS (multicast DNS. system used by Apple AirPrint and Google CloudPrint will be extended to include printers which have been installed using the new API. The Google Cloud Print team said, “We are working with our partners at CUPS and Avahi to integrate their printing sputions seamlessly into the new API so that you can easily find and install printers on your network. Amazon’s cloud computing arm has announced a new, improved pricing structure for its cloud computing services. Amazon announced that it is lowering prices on all its storage services – including S3, EC2 and EBS – by between 16% and 25%. It is also halving prices for its compute instances and virtual private cloud (VPC. products. The new pricing structure takes effect today and will apply across all regions in which Amazon offers its services. The company said in a statement that these changes reflect “the substantial investments we’ve made in capacity and infrastructure”. As well as cutting prices, Amazon has improved its performance-related offerings for cloud customers. Its Relational Database Service (RDS), for example, now comes with automatic resizing up to 15GB RAM and 30GB storage per instance. Customers can also now purchase Reserved Instance upgrades. enabling them to purchase large numbers of one-year reservations upfront, instead of having to buy them month by month. Amazon said that customers using its Elastic MapReduce service – which enables them to run large-scale data analytics in the cloud – can now access Reserved Instances at a 22% discount. And it has increased the number of EC2 instances available on each of its price tiers by 33%. However, this increase only applies to instances in its US East Region (Northern Virginia. Customers using EC2 in other regions will see no such increase in instance availability until next year. By making these changes, Amazon hopes to reassure customers that its cloud computing arm is still growing strongly in spite of increased competition from rivals such as Rackspace, Microsoft and Google. Indeed, despite the price cuts, Amazon says it still remains cheaper than some of its rivals when it comes to running applications in the cloud. And it claims that its new instance upgrades mean its compute instances are currently 40% better value than those offered by Rackspace, and 20% more powerful than those offered by Microsoft Azure.
