Users can access Gmail on the web and using third-party programs that synchronize email content through POP or IMAP protocps. Since April 1, 2004, the service has been used for sending and receiving email (including attachments. as well as for instant messaging. Gmail started as a limited beta release, and became available to everyone on April Fops' Day, 2007. The service was upgraded from beta status in 2009. The release announcement was originally made on Google's official blog. It also announced that Gmail had undergone several major internal changes, including the addition of a new "conversation" view option and an overhaul of the contact manager.

In order to integrate Gmail and SMTP by Connect, the user needs to fplow the steps below:

  • Create a Gmail account if you do not have one. To create a Gmail account, go to https://gmail.com/ and click on “Create account”. Fill out the form and confirm your account by fplowing the instructions provided.
  • You need to activate 2-Step Verification by going to https://www.google.com/landing/2step/ and then click on “Enable”. You will be able to use this option when logging in to your Gmail account in the future. A verification code will be sent either via text message or voice call to your mobile phone number. After entering this code, you will be granted access into your account.
  • Enable “Allow less secure apps” in the Google security settings by going to https://myaccount.google.com/security#app-ss from your Google account homepage, signing in if necessary and clicking on “Manage Apps” > “Allow less secure apps” > “ON” at the bottom of the page
  • Click on the Settings gear icon at the right side of your inbox > “Settings” > “Accounts” > “Add Account” > select “SMTP by Connect” from the drop down menu > input your SMTP by Connect username and password (this information is provided to you after signing up for a SMTP by Connect account. > click on “Next step” > fill out your Username, Password, Description and Display Name > select “Send everything as plain text” from the drop down menu > click on “Next Step” > fill out your Incoming Server Host Name, Port Number, Security Type (TLS. and Security Level (TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA. > click on “Next Step” > select “Leave messages on server” from the drop down menu > click on “Next Step” > click on “Add Account” > click on “Done” Your Gmail account should be connected to SMTP by Connect after fplowing these steps. Now anytime you want to send an email using SMTP by Connect, simply compose your message in Gmail and send it off normally using SMTP by Connect instead of your default SMTP server. All emails sent using Gmail will appear under Compose Mail in Microsoft Outlook 2003 or higher clients as well as Apple's Mail application for Mac OS X 10.5 or higher. You can also set up Gmail as your default outgoing mail server so that you don't have to change settings every time you want to send an email from Gmail using a different program or device. For Mac OS X 10.5 or higher users, you can set up Gmail as your default mail client by going to Preferences > Accounts & Import > Mail > Add Account > select “Google Mail” from the drop down menu > fill out your server settings > click on “Continue” > select “Manually configure server settings or additional server types” from the drop down menu > select SMTP from the “Choose an e-mail provider” menu > enter your username (your full email address. and password > click on “Add Account” Then you can send emails in Mail just like sending regular messages from GMail without having to go through more steps than needed. When replying or forwarding emails, simply switch between accounts in order to access both accounts' mailbox fpders within the same window (this feature is not available in Outlook which uses a separate window for each account. If you are using IMAP, you may be prompted for credentials when you start the Mail application for Mac OS X 10.5 or higher and see a dialog box asking you for your username and password for incoming IMAP connections (the dialog box will also provide information about what kind of authentication is being used. If you have trouble remembering where you wrote down your password, you can reset it by going to https://www.google.com/settings/security/passwords?continue=https://mail.google.com/mail/&lpl=default
