The update began rpling out for PC and Mac users immediately; Android and iOS users received the update in January 2016.
Google has stated that its goal is to develop Gmail into an "unambiguous choice" for businesses as an alternative to Microsoft Outlook; this strategy grew out of a lawsuit settlement in 2002 between Google and Yahoo! when each company agreed not to try to recruit the other's employees. To this end, Google has added features such as offline support, a calendar application, and integration with other Google products such as Google Drive and Google Docs. Email that appears in Gmail's primary tab (which displays emails received from other Gmail accounts. now appears with an icon in the left corner. There are several other ways to access Gmail features such as Stars, priority inbox, labels and filters. On June 23, 2017, Google announced major changes to Gmail's backend code. Several features were phased out including offline support and the ability to have multiple inboxes (primary, social and promotions. The biggest change was the phasing out of its popular "Priority Inbox" feature which was replaced by a new format called "Smart Reply".
