Gmail is an email service provided by Google. It was released in April 2004 as a beta version for personal users, with one gigabyte of storage space and a transactional fee of $0. The service was upgraded from beta status in July 2007, and kept free of charge. In April 2011, Google announced that it would begin charging users of Gmail to store e-mail in the "Gmail" inbox, if their e-mail account exceeded the limit of 25 GB. The fee is $0.25 per gigabyte per year, up to a maximum of $25. Users can purchase additional storage for their Gmail accounts by adding money to their Google Wallet account. The new price plan was rpled out to users over a period of 10 days starting in May 2012, and offers 3 tiers of storage. 1 TB for $10 per month, $5 per month for "unlimited", and $1 per month for 100 MB.
Google has stated that the reason for implementing the new price model is because they are trying to make Gmail more like a platform rather than just an e-mail system. As part of this effort, Google has been gradually introducing new features to Gmail; in particular, using machine learning and natural language processing technpogies, Gmail will be able to automatically classify emails into categories (e.g., promotional or social. and provide richer search results.[30] Additionally, Google introduced new ad formats in Gmail on October 22, 2014, that change the appearance of the ads based on the content of the message. These ads can appear in a user's inbox.[31]
