GitLab?

GitLab is a cloud-based hosting service for projects that use either Git or Mercurial for version management. It combines project management, code review, issue tracking and a wiki into a single web-based application. It is free for public and private projects. GitLab allows multiple people to work on the same project at the same time, making it a great choice for team management. GitLab can be installed on a local computer, on a private server or into the cloud.

GitLab was created by Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Valery Sizov, who both have experience with scaling software as they worked with Mail.ru Group as developers. In 2011, they started working on their own product which later became GitLab. In January 2012, GitLab was released publicly. The initial release had only two features - project boards and issues. Later in the same year, the merge request feature was added. In 2013, GitLab became open source and started generating revenue through its premium subscription plans. Today, GitLab is used by over 100,000 organizations including NASA, Alibaba Group, CERN, Intel, Digital Ocean, and National Geographic.

GitLab?

Git is a distributed revision contrp system with an emphasis on speed. It is primarily used for source code management in software development, but it can be used to keep track of changes in any set of files. Unlike most systems designed for revision contrp, Git was designed to be fast. it tracks directories in a file-system like structure rather than individual files; it uses SHA1 hashes to speed up checking out files; it has multiple transport protocps. Unlike Subversion and Mercurial, Git does not have a centralized server front-end—the SCMs are distributed and there is no master server. The typical workflow is to create a new project under a directory named "repository", either locally or on a remote server, and then add files to the index using one of several commands. add/staging area/index, status, diff/staged changes, commit/push/publish . After that you can either push your changes to a remote repository or start cplaborating with other users via pull requests and merge requests.
