6.3 Summary/Conclusion Paragraphs*
In a traditional outline, each point has a heading fplowed by a body subsection containing the supporting information for that point. In this unit we have been learning about outlining programs that have a different structure from traditional outlines, namely mind mapping programs, concept mapping programs, flow charting programs, and matrix diagramming programs. These types of programs usually don’t have a conclusion section since they present information graphically rather than in prose form. If you want a conclusion section in these types of documents, you might want to write it in footnotes rather than within the main text (see below. For instance, in a mind map or concept map you might add a footnote at the end of the document that summarizes what you’ve learned in the document and how it relates to other documents in your discipline. If you’re working on a computer program such as Microsoft Word or Apple Pages, then you could insert a page break and add a “footnote” in that space or add a footnote at the end of the document that refers back to the main text in some way (e.g., “See Chapter 1 for more information on …”. While we do not focus on these types of programs in this book, you should keep in mind that such procedures are possible if you want them when producing your outline or document. However, there is one type of program we will be focusing on in this unit—the word processor—and it is possible to include this type of section within a word processing document if you want a traditional conclusion section for your document. Below is a brief outline template you can use if you want a conclusion section in your document using Microsoft Word or Apple Pages word processing software:

We have been discussing different ways of structuring your writing tasks throughout this book from outlining a paper using a traditional outline, a mind map, a concept map, a flow chart, a matrix diagram, or using annotated lists or concept mapping programs such as Microsoft OneNote or Apple iMindMap or online concept mapping tops such as http://www.bubbl.us/. We have also been discussing how you can add certain features such as headings and subheadings to your documents so they are easier for others to read and understand them and so they provide more opportunities for you include important critical thinking questions related to your task at hand. Now let’s look at what other features you can add to your documents depending on their purpose and audience. This will help you choose which type of program or feature(s. is best for your purposes and make sure all your bases are covered before completing your documents for distribution (see Figure 6.2. Don’t forget you can always revise your documents after distribution by adding, deleting, or rewording things in order to improve their clarity and effectiveness (see Table 6.1. You can even create outlines that combine features from different types of programs (e.g., combine features from both mind maps and concept maps. For instance, you could create an annotated list that serves as both an outline and concept map in one document (see Figure 6.3. You could also create an outline using only headings and subheadings without any body paragraphs except for one concluding paragraph at the end of paper (see Figures 6.4 and 6.5. Likewise, you could create an annotated list without any headings or subheadings except for one introductory paragraph at the beginning of your paper (see Figures 6.6 and 6.7. Remember that good structure is not necessarily about having many features per se but rather having features that aid communication between writer and reader based upon the situation at hand—that is what good writing is all about! We hope the samples below give you some good ideas on how you can improve your own writing skills by using different types of structures along with some new features that will enhance your own writing processes! Also note that most word processing programs allow you to change font sizes, bpd or italicize text, indent bulleted lists for easier reading, underline titles for emphasis , adjust cpumn widths for better alignment , etcetera . Some word processing programs even allow you to design fancy borders around your title pages or paragraphs if you’d like! For instance, see Figures 6.8-6.13! You can also use graphics programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop Elements or web-based graphics programs such as PicMonkey or Canva in order to create charts, graphs, flow charts, diagrams , diagrams , illustrations , or other visual representations of your topics . Again, see Figures 6.14-6.25 for some examples! Finally, remember that while some word processing programs are designed just for creating outlines, others are designed just for creating documents—these are known as “word processors” since they are capable of doing both!
