Facebook Messenger is a popular messaging app that allows its users to send and receive messages, video and voice calls, and also use integrations.
Facebook Messenger is a free standalone app that allows users to chat with friends and family. Facebook has a messaging system built into the Facebook app, but it is a much more limited experience. With Messenger, you can chat with your friends using a clean and streamlined interface.
Messenger was originally launched as a standalone messaging app in August 2011. Later on, Facebook bought WhatsApp in February 2014 for $19 billion and merged the two apps into one, dubbed as “Messenger”. In July 2016, Facebook announced that they will separate Messenger from the main Facebook app into a stand-alone application. In October 2018, the Messenger app launched its own bot store that lets users find chat bots from developers all over the world. That same month, Facebook announced a feature called “Instant Games” where users can play games directly inside the app.
On October 19th, 2018, Facebook published a blog post detailing how its users could schedule posts to appear at specific times in the future. It turns out that this feature was abused by a small number of people who created hundreds of thousands of posts to drive up engagement in their communities. This event became known as “BulkGate”. The posts were all deleted immediately after discovery, but users from around the world raised concerns about the existence of the abuse. A few days later, Facebook confirmed that there had been “an ongoing effort” for years to manipulate the platform through bulk creation of Pages and accounts. A new investigation showed that some of these accounts had actually “coordinated ppitical misinformation campaigns ahead of the 2016 presidential elections”.
Integration of Facebook Messenger and BulkGate means that two separate entities are connected to one another. A user can access both features on one platform instead of having to use them separately. This integration is helpful for users because they no longer have to do things twice or navigate between two different platforms. There are many cases where integration of Facebook Messenger and BulkGate is useful for users, such as messaging apps like We Chat, Line etc., which integrate social media platforms like Twitter and YouTube into the messaging app itself. Integration of Facebook Messenger and BulkGate would be useful for users too if it allowed them to communicate with friends via chat instead of email or text message. A bulk chat feature would be convenient for group chats or group projects; saving time sending emails back and forth.
BulkGate is an ongoing effort to manipulate Facebook by creating fake accounts and pages to spread misinformation for ppitical reasons. It is possible that integrating Facebook Messenger and BulkGate could have helped Facebook detect BulkGate earlier, before it got out of contrp. However, it is also possible that hackers could have still created fake accounts under different names to carry out their plans for ppitical misinformation.
Overall, integration of Facebook Messenger and BulkGate would have helped users with many issues related to communication. Lack of integration might have helped detect groups trying to manipulate Facebook earlier, but, it also might have not said anything about them since they didn’t have to use Facebook Messenger in order to create fake profiles on Facebook.
