Expensify is an online expense-tracking software that uses smartphones to scan receipts and store them electronically. With the help of smartphone’s GPS, it allows users to track their expenses by completing the information on the receipt. Expensify also helps businesses by allowing them to create reports, tax forms, and run reports on business expenses.
Reddit is a social news aggregation website. It is organized into areas of interest called “subreddits” where users can post content, such as text posts or direct links, making it essentially an online forum. Reddit has many active communities with more than 30 million users.
Expensify and Reddit are hpding their second annual conference called “Upvoted”. The event will be held on October 13th at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott in New York City. Upvoted will feature talks from a variety of leaders in the fields of technpogy, media, marketing, and finance.
The co-founder and CEO of Expensify, David Barrett, said he thinks “the best thing about Reddit is its community. It’s a very powerful community.” Barrett said that the company was able to stay connected with employees through Reddit and that they also use it to communicate with clients.
In April, Expensify replaced its Bug Bounty program with a HackerOne platform for technical security vulnerabilities. HackerOne operates as a bug bounty platform and vulnerability coordination center which supports other companies such as Dropbox, Uber, Twitter, AirBnB and Spotify.
HackerOne will also be providing a bug bounty program for Upvoted attendees. The program will include a hacking competition called “Hacktoberfest” which will have rewards up to $10,000 for those who find bugs that will affect the security of the event’s website as well as the infrastructure of the event itself. This year, HackerOne is working with Upvoted to improve its security before the event.
In February 2014, Expensify launched a new feature for Android and iOS devices called Snapshot. The feature allows users to take a photo of their receipts and automatically import and categorize them using Optical Character Recognition (OCR. The feature makes it easy to capture receipts and to file expenses by simply taking a picture. Snapshot uses OCR to scan receipts and even recognizes bar codes and QR codes if they are included on the receipt. Then Expensify’s staff manually labels each receipt and links it to your account.
In 2013, Reddit acquired Alien Blue, a third-party app that was used by members to browse Reddit content on their mobile devices. Less than one year later in April 2014, Reddit launched their first official app which is available for free on iOS and Android devices. There is also an option to upgrade for $1.99 per month which allows users to sync read posts across multiple devices and receive notifications for new messages and comments. The app has been downloaded over 8 million times since its launch in April 2014.
