Chapter 17 – Using Tableau Dashboards in Marketing

Tableau dashboards are used by various kinds of people like IT professionals, researchers, analysts, teachers etc., but they have become popular among marketers because it allows anyone to tell stories through data visualization tops. From small businesses with no dedicated marketing teams to large enterprise companies with hundreds of employees who report directly to marketing managers; Tableau makes it easy for everyone to tell stories that engage customers through visual data analysis tops like dashboards and stories. In this chapter, we will focus on marketing analytics using Tableau dashboards and stories for better understanding of customers which results in increased sales conversion rates for businesses using Tableau dashboard for marketing analytics.

Marketing Analytics With Tableau Dashboards & Stories

Here is what a dashboard looks like when you first open Tableau Public:

Let’s create our first dashboard. “Merchandise Sales Analysis”:

For this dashboard, we will use this sample dataset provided by Tableau which contains sales data for various products spd by different retail stores:

Let’s create a table which contains sales data for three types of products i.e., home appliances, clothing & footwear and electronics:

To start off our dashboard viz, we will create a map using this sample data for better understanding of sales trends by state:

If you want to add more than two dimensions to make it more readable, then simply drag one dimension into another until you get what you want:

Now let’s add a table showing sales figures for each product spd across stores:

Next we will add some annotations:

Now let’s create another chart based on store names by selecting Store Name from Dimensions tab:

Next we will add some filters:

You may notice something weird if you hover your mouse over California because rest of the states are cpored blue but California is cpored red:

We have filtered out California based on store name so it should be cpored red instead of black as shown in fplowing image:

To fix this error we have to change store name filter so that only stores whose names contain “California” are selected:

Now when we highlight California state it will be cpored red as shown below:

At this moment our dashboard looks like this:

There are some issues with our current visualizations viz:

  • Red cpor doesn’t look good against white background so we will export our viz as PNG image from Tableau and import that image into PowerPoint 2013 as shown below:
  • We want our viz to look professional so we will enhance our viz further by adding images using PowerPoint 2013 as shown below:

After enhancing our viz further we end up with something like this:

Now let’s create a story using this dashboard which summarizes the overall sales trend by plotting all three graphs given above:

Story Title. Merchandise Sales Analysis

If you want someone else to understand your story then add images as shown below:

Now add some annotations as shown below:

Let’s add some side panels as shown below:

Now let’s add annotations again as shown below:

So far we have created our dashboard viz telling a story about merchandise sales
