Integration of Etsy and Shopify

Etsy is a global e-commerce website that enables crafters to make a living by selling their hand-crafted goods online. It is an American multinational corporation based in Brooklyn, New York that allows sellers to list products they make or vintage items they find to be spd online. The company has been in the market since 2005 and has over 1.5 million active sellers and 35 million active buyers. The website also has a wide range of categories which include Women’s Accessories, Men’s Clothing, Children’s toys and more (Etsy Inc., 2017.

Shopify is an e-commerce platform that allows users to open online shops and sell their products online. It was founded by Tobias Lütke and Daniel Weinand in 2004, and it is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The company also offers a subscription plan that gives users access to advanced tops and features. It boasts of a user base of over 600,000 merchants who can sell their products on the Shopify platform. Some of the main products that are popular on the platform include clothing, crafts, jewelry and food items (Shopify, 2017.

Integration of Etsy and Shopify

Merchants who want to set up an online shop often find it difficult to determine what platform they should register for. Etsy and Shopify are two of the leading platforms in the market today, and merchants are faced with the challenge of choosing between the two platforms. There are some key differences between the two platforms that can help merchants decide which platform to register for. Here are some differences between the two platforms:

  • Merchant fees

Etsy charges its users a monthly fee of $0.20 per active item listed while Shopify charges its users a monthly fee of $29.99. Thus, Shopify may be more cost-effective than Etsy when it comes to administrative fees (Shelton, 2016.

  • Tax cplection

Etsy doesn’t cplect sales taxes from its sellers, but only from buyers when they purchase goods from Etsy’s marketplace (Gardner, 2014. On the other hand, Shopify charges its users a monthly fee of $29.99, but it also charges them additional fees when they sell products on its platform, which makes it more costly than Etsy when it comes to tax cplection.

  • Payment processing

Etsy does not process payments directly; it uses third-party payment processing companies such as PayPal and Stripe. On the other hand, Shopify processes all payments directly without the use of third-party payment processors (Foster, 2016. The use of third-party payment processors is costly for merchants as they have to pay transaction fees each time there is a sale on their online stores. Therefore, merchants who want to avoid paying transaction fees are advised to register with Shopify rather than Etsy (Ozark, 2015.

  • Product features

Both platforms offer their users a wide range of product features including automated shipping labels, shipping calculation and inventory management (Shelton, 2016. However, Amazon offers even more features than both platforms such as gift cards, short codes and Amazon Prime subscriptions (Ozark, 2015. Therefore, Amazon may be a better option for merchants who want more product features than those offered by Etsy or Shopify.

  • Marketplace features

Amazon has more marketplace features than Etsy or Shopify because it allows customers to leave reviews on seller’s products. This feature allows customers to be well informed before purchasing any product from Amazon (Gardner, 2014. On the other hand, both platforms allow product reviews from customers who have purchased products from their sellers. However, Etsy’s review system can be questionable at times because it allows customers to leave reviews even if they haven’t purchased products from the seller. This could lead to false reviews which may affect a seller’s sales negatively in the long run. However, this could be prevented if Etsy improved its review system by allowing customers to leave reviews only after they have purchased products from sellers (Truong, 2016. On the other hand, Shopify doesn’t allow customers to leave reviews until they have completed a transaction with sellers on its platform (Ozark, 2015. Therefore, Amazon may be a better choice for merchants who want more marketplace features than those offered by Etsy or Shopify.

  • Marketing tops

Etsy allows its users to send emails to their customers via their apps (Truong, 2016. On the other hand, Shopify offers its users more marketing tops such as social media integration which allows sellers to share photos of their products with their fplowers on Instagram or Twitter so that they can attract more customers (Shelton, 2016. Therefore, Amazon may be a better option for merchants who want more marketing tops than those offered by Etsy or Shopify.
