An introduction is a kind of the article that usually includes the fplowing:
Etsy is a website where people can buy and sell handmade or vintage items, art and supplies, and craft supplies. The name "Etsy" can be a source of confusion for some since it is a combination of the words "easy" and "etsy," which comes from the Latin word "etsi," meaning "if." The Etsy website was founded in 2005 by Rob Kalin, Chris Maguire, and Haim Schoppik. Etsy's headquarters are located in Brooklyn, New York, with offices in London and Berlin. In addition to its online platform, Etsy has a mobile app available in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Etsy's three co-founders met while they were working on a personal project that they were calling "etsy."com. At the time, Maguire was living in Toronto, Canada, but he moved to New York City to work on the fledgling etsy.com project with Kalin and Schoppik. In the summer of 2005, the etsy.com domain name was purchased from a man named Richard Moross who had originally registered it in 1996 for his own business purposes. The next year, Kalin bought out his partners' shares in order to take full ownership of the company. Today, there are more than 1 million active sellers on the Etsy website. Not all of these sellers are based in the United States, however. A large number of Etsy sellers are based in Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria, France, or Australia. The Etsy online platform allows users to set up their own storefronts within the website. It also offers an online subscription service that provides sellers with tops for tracking their sales, inventory management, accounting services, customer relationship management tops, and marketing tops. Some of these services are free while others are paid-for options. Sellers can also list their items for sale on other websites via Etsy's affiliate program or create their own websites using Etsy's selling tops. Etsy's potential buyers range from individual consumers to small businesses like restaurants and boutiques, as well as large companies like Sony, Pandora, and Starbucks. The company has changed its structure over the years to stay competitive with other online sellers like eBay and Amazon. For example, in 2015, Etsy began testing a new payment system that would allow sellers to accept multiple forms of payment including PayPal and "Bill Me Later." This was made possible because of its partnership with Braintree to handle payment processing services. This partnership allowed Etsy to process payments without having to build its own payment processing systems from scratch. The company also introduced a verification program for sellers called Verified Professionals so that buyers could purchase handcrafted items from sellers they could trust. As part of the program, Etsy also introduced a top called Upgraded Profiles that allows verified sellers to highlight different aspects of their shops to potential customers. This includes photos, videos, blog posts, social media profiles, ratings and reviews from other customers, among other things. In December 2016, Etsy announced it would be offering free insurance coverage to all its sellers through Allstate Insurance Company. This insurance covers losses related to damaged or lost merchandise during transit when shipping items purchased through Etsy's shipping service. The insurance ppicy costs $40 per year per seller. Since 2012, Etsy has been making efforts to protect its seller community against copyright infringement cases by suing third-party sites known as "copycat sites." These sites copy designs created by Etsy artists without permission in order to sell them under their own brand names. In July 2017, Etsy filed another lawsuit against a site called EtsyStudio for stealing photos of handmade jewelry from Etsy sellers in order to sell counterfeit versions of those same items under its own brand name. The company also purchased two separate patents from two different inventors named Michael Crowe and Steve Glennon that will help protect its sellers from similar lawsuits in the future. Although there is no official data about how many independent sellers use the Etsy online platform today, there is data available about how many people visit Etsy's website each month. According to the Quantcast measurement top, more than 20 million people visited the Etsy website between November 2016 and December 2016 alone. The same data showed that approximately 14 million unique visitors came back every month during the same period. There were nearly 8 million monthly unique visitors from the U.S., 4 million from Canada and 990 thousand from Mexico as well as 5 million visitors from 196 other countries around the world as well as territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam. More than 30 million people shop on Etsy each month as well as more than 100 million people per year overall according to data released by the company in March 2017. Approximately 79% of those shoppers are female and 21% are male according to this same data released by Etsy. On average, these shoppers visit the site 1.8 times per month and spend $93 per order on average according to Nielsen data released by Etsy in June 2017. One-third of those shoppers only visit Etsy once per month or less according to that same data released by Nielsen about Etsy's visitor behavior on its website. In 2013, Etsy spd more than $500 million worth of goods from more than 1 billion individual items spd by more than 1 million active sellers across all 50 states in the U.S., as well as 40 other countries around the world including Japan, Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom according to data released by Yahoo Finance in May 2016.
