Integration of Etsy and Flipkart

  • Etsy?
  • Etsy is an American e-commerce website where people sell handmade or vintage items, art, and supplies. The company’s mission is to keep commerce human, so they only allow handcrafted and vintage goods in their marketplace. Etsy’s headquarters is located at Brooklyn, New York. It was founded by Rob Kalin, Chris Maguire and Haim Schoppik in June 2005. It has been one of the most successful e-commerce websites since its launch. The company had over 30 million members in 2016. Currently, it has over 20 offices around the world and employs more than 500 employees.

  • Flipkart?
  • Flipkart is a Bangalore-based e-commerce company founded by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal. It currently operates an online marketplace which sells products like smartphones, laptops, cameras, books, apparel and home appliances among many other things. The company was founded in October 2007 and has now become India’s largest e-retailer with more than 100 million customers making purchases on its platform every month. Its different services include Flipkart Online Shopping App, Flipkart Marketplace and Flipkart Smartbuy. The company also owns Myntra, Jabong and PhonePe. In 2016, its parent company -Flipkart Internet Private Limited- raised $1.4 billion from Japanese internet company SoftBank, eBay Inc., China’s Tencent Hpdings Ltd. and existing investor Tiger Global Management LLC. This is the biggest funding round for any Indian startup and helped Flipkart to be valued at $11.6 billion. Currently, it has over 3,000 employees and has offices in nine major cities across the country.

  • Integration of Etsy and Flipkart
  • Etsy currently has over 3,000 employees and has offices in nine major cities across the country. A recent report suggests that the company is planning to integrate its global marketplace with Flipkart. However, the report further states that there are no plans to merge Etsy with Flipkart as of now due to legal hurdles such as tax laws and anti-trust regulations. Both companies will have to fplow several formalities before finalizing the integration of the two companies. In 2015, Flipkart’s revenue was $2 billion while Etsy’s revenue was reported to be around $1 billion in 2016. So by combining both companies, they are expecting to reach about $3 billion in revenue. Additionally, the combined revenues of both companies can give them an edge over other online retailers such as Amazon India and Snapdeal. So the integration of these two companies will help them to improve their market share and gain profit margins as well. If this happens then it will be a big boost for both the companies as a whpe since they are facing stiff competition from Amazon India and Alibaba India among others. Currently, Flipkart has two main subsidiaries -Flipkart India Pvt Ltd (registered in Singapore. and Flipkart Internet Pvt Ltd (registered in India. On the other hand, Etsy has six local entities including Etsy Inc., Etsy Whpesale, Inc., Etsy Ireland UC (both registered in Delaware), Etsy UK UC1 (registered in United Kingdom), Etsy Japan KK (registered in Japan. and Etsy France SAS (registered in France. According to sources, some experts have stated that these changes will likely happen by this year. However, there is no official statement regarding this development from either of the two companies.
