Etsy, Inc. is an American e-commerce company that allows individuals and businesses around the world to sell their handmade or vintage goods through its online marketplace. It provides sellers with a platform where they can list their products for a sale, and buyers can browse and purchase those products. Etsy also helps sellers create their own shop and build their brand. Sellers can use these shops and their marketing tops to promote their business.
Etsy was founded in 2005 by Rob Kalin, Chris Maguire, and Haim Schoppik, and it launched in May 2007. The site's headquarters are located in DUMBO, Brooklyn, New York City.
The name Etsy comes from the phrase "et se tut." In Latin, it means "and she sewed". From 2005 to 2007, Etsy was a virtual open air market for crafters who created and spd their goods on the Internet as a hobby. In 2008, Etsy began a partnership with Yahoo! which included selling some of Etsy's products on Yahoo! Shopping. In December 2009, Etsy raised $27 million from Union Square Ventures and other investors, bringing total funding to $32 million. In June 2010, the company acquired once-offsite photo sharing community Eyebeam and in November, launched an upgraded seller profile page as well as Etsy Labs, which allowed members to test features that were in development.
The company was formerly headquartered in Dumbo, Brooklyn. It is now headquartered in Brooklyn Heights, with offices in Manhattan and Westchester County. As of June 2012, the company employed 208 people.
Etsy generates revenue almost entirely from a 3.5% transaction fee on each completed sale. Online payment services such as PayPal and Google Wallet are also available. Until 2014, when Etsy was part of a group of companies that agreed to pay $16 million to settle a class action lawsuit brought by 5,000 sellers alleging that they had been underpaid for processing fees between 2007 and 2014 due to an incorrect calculation of shipping rates charged on each order. After this lawsuit was settled, Etsy changed its ppicies to address problems that sellers were experiencing with customer service and communication with Etsy's help center, improving both significantly according to third-party reviews.
