Etsy is an online marketplace where people can buy and sell handmade or vintage goods, art, and supplies. Users can create a personal storefront to sell their own items, as well as purchase items from other users. In March 2017, Etsy reported on its blog that sellers on the platform earn, on average, $3,469 annually from selling their goods on the platform.
Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service. is a web service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), which provides a simple way to store objects in the cloud. It is designed to provide 99.999999999% durability and the ability to scale storage capacity up and down quickly and cheaply.
In May 2018, Etsy introduced a new API called “Sell on Amazon” for sellers on the Etsy platform. This feature allows sellers to “automatically sync inventory across all three marketplaces – Etsy, Amazon Handmade, and Amazon – so you never have to worry about managing multiple inventories again.” By integrating with Amazon S3, Etsy sellers can list their products on Amazon at no cost. The advantage of using this option is that Amazon S3 allows users to store unlimited amounts of data for no additional cost. Additionally, Amazon S3 provides users with a fully managed service with 99.999999999% durability and 99.99% availability of objects over a given year.
By using Amazon S3, Etsy sellers will be able to have unlimited storage space for their digital goods. For example, if a seller sells PDF files on Etsy, he/she could easily upload these files onto Amazon S3 instead of having to pay for additional storage space at Etsy. Another benefit of using Amazon S3 is that sellers would not have to worry about how they should store their products on Amazon S3 since it automatically syncs with the other marketplaces. A third benefit of using Amazon S3 is that sellers would not need to worry about maintaining the seller relationship with Amazon since Amazon will manage it for them.
Based on the information presented above, I believe that Etsy and Amazon should integrate their platforms. As discussed above, by using Amazon S3, sellers will be able to save money because they do not have to pay for storage space on both platforms. Also, since sellers do not have to worry about maintaining the seller relationship with both platforms, they can reduce costs associated with doing so. In addition, using Amazon S3 also reduces the complexity of creating products since sellers do not have to worry about converting their products from one format to another. Finally, since Amazon S3 provides unlimited storage space for users, it makes sense for them to use it because they do not have to pay for additional storage space on both platforms. Overall, I believe that integrating Etsy and Amazon S3 will benefit both parties in terms of reducing operational costs.
