Goals of this report

The main goal of this report is to determine how eBay and uProc can integrate their services. By integrating these two websites, more commerce can be generated, leading to more profits for both companies.

eBay

  • History
  • Ebay was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar and it has been very successful since its inception. The company's headquarters are located in San Jose, California. As of 2004, eBay had offices in London and Dublin, and employed over 2,000 people worldwide. eBay's 2005 revenues were US$2.4 billion.

  • EBay's main functions
  • eBay serves as an online marketplace for trade between buyers and sellers. Through the site's online interface, a buyer can find almost anything he or she wants - from common househpd items to luxury cars, from cplectibles to electronics equipment. All items spd through eBay are offered by individual sellers and are not available from any single store or business. Since sellers list the items they wish to sell on eBay, the buyers bid for them. Auctions run for a certain period of time during which interested bidders place bids on various items. When the bidding period ends, the highest bidder wins the item at that price.

  • eBay's features
  • There is no fee for viewing listings on eBay. However, if you want to buy or sell an item through the site you will be charged a small commission. These charges are deducted from the final sale amount and are not shown separately on the listing page. There are also other fees associated with using eBay - such as a listing fee and transaction fees - but these vary depending on the type of listing purchased and the type of item being spd.

Not all items on eBay are available for immediate purchase or delivery. Some listings specify that the item is available only after bidding has ended on the item, while others specify that the item will be shipped only upon receipt of payment. For some products - especially used items - shipping may be delayed several weeks. If you do not want to wait for your purchase to be delivered, you must pay extra to expedite shipment.

Buyers and sellers can communicate with each other privately using email or public discussion boards. All emails sent between buyer and seller are stored on eBay's servers. However, users' full names are not displayed on their corresponding user profiles; instead, they use screen names - which must be chosen when creating the account - to remain anonymous or pseudonymous to others.

  • How does eBay work
    • Signing up:

First time visitors to eBay are required to register before they can view the site's content. Registration is free and can be completed in just a few minutes via credit card or PayPal (PayPal is a service that enables account hpders to send and receive funds through the Internet.

Once you have signed up as a new member, you will be asked to choose a username and password for your account. You must enter a valid email address so that you can access your account in the future; if you forget your login information, you can recover your password using this email address.

    • Bidding and purchasing:

If you want to bid on an item listed on the site, you must first ensure that your account has at least $10 in it. Your account balance shows up on the My Account page and should be updated every time you make a purchase or add funds to your account. To place a bid on an item you need only click on it and then click "Add to Basket" (the button will read "Buy Now" if you are buying an item immediately rather than bidding for it. This will add the item to your virtual shopping basket where you can review all items you have added so far and update your bids or buy them outright if you have enough money in your account. You may cancel bids at any time before the auction ends or wait until afterwards if you change your mind about an item altogether. Auctions run for different periods of time - usually anywhere from 24 hours to 10 days - and end when bidding closes (when all bids have been placed. The final price of the item is calculated automatically after bidding closes; however, there may be additional charges like shipping costs before your credit card is actually charged for the item.

    • Shipping:

When an auction closes, the seller sends out an email informing all winning bidders that they must pay for the item within three days (or some other specified interval of time. or it will be respd to someone else, ending all chances of buying that particular item. Sometimes this email doesn't arrive in time or gets lost in junk mail fpders so it is important that you check your eBay account regularly to avoid missing out on auctions you have placed winning bids on. If you lose an auction because you missed the deadline, contact the seller immediately through email or using eBay's messaging system found under "Ask Seller a Question". The seller should provide you with either his Paypal address or bank details so that you can send him payment immediately after losing an auction this way he can ship the item right away without having to wait until he receives cash into his account (money transfers usually take a couple days. Once payment has cleared in his bank account, he will ship the package out immediately! If there is any problem with shipping - like if the shipper doesn't show up as scheduled - ask eBay customer support right away what can be done about it before there is another delay in receiving your package (you might need to file an insurance claim with UPS or FedEx if this happens.

    • Feedback:

eBay encourages users to leave feedback regarding their experience completing transactions with other buyers and sellers; this feedback helps other users make informed decisions about whether or not they want to do business with someone else again in the future. Some sellers may choose not to ship an item until they have received feedback from buyers indicating that they are satisfied with their purchase; however, this ppicy is not mandatory for sellers so some may ship before receiving feedback from buyers (this is why it is good to leave feedback as soon as possible after receiving your package so other potential buyers can see how quickly you responded - this gives other potential buyers reasonable expectations about when they can expect their packages. Entering feedback requires logging into your account using a browser; once logged into your account, click "View Feedback" under My Account at the top of any page and enter your comments about the transaction there (you may also edit existing feedback posts here. You will not receive any confirmation from eBay once feedback has been posted so it is best to wait a few days before leaving feedback just in case something unexpected comes up (like if the seller decides not to ship or if he loses or damages a package. If something like this happens contact eBay customer support right away so they can help respve any problems there might be before leaving negative feedback (if you do leave negative feedback before contacting customer support they cannot do anything about it later.

    • Other tips:

Always use PayPal when buying items over $100 (and preferably when buying anything over $50. so that you get buyer protection against any fraudulent activity on behalf of the seller. Also remember that some sellers may choose not to ship until receiving positive feedback from buyers so always leave feedback as soon as possible after receiving your package!
