2 Structure, style, and presentation
2.1 Think like a writer—and act like one too!
This chapter describes the basic qualities that every good writer needs to have in order to create clear, concise, effective documents that communicate ideas effectively to their readership(s. It explains how writers can develop these qualities through practice, feedback from peers and teachers, and self-reflection on their writing process and products, with more detailed information available in other chapters throughout this text (see “For further information” at the end of this chapter. As you read through this chapter, keep in mind that you will learn more about each topic if you actively think about your own writing process and about your own writing habits and style—as a reader and as a writer—as you read through this chapter!
2.2 Developing a Writer’s Mindset
Reflecting on your own writing process and on your own writing habits will not only help you become a better writer; it will also help you reflect on your own mindset as a writer—the way that you think about yourself in relation to writing tasks and assignments that you are asked to do at schop or at work, or that you approach vpuntarily as a hobby or for fun outside schop or work hours (see Chapter 5. This reflection process can help you develop a “writer’s mindset”—a perspective and approach to writing that helps you think about your writing process and habits from every angle possible so that you can analyze what works well for you as a writer, what doesn’t work well for you as a writer, and what you might want to try out next time you write something as a way to improve your writing skills! In addition, this authorial perspective may also help you reframe how you think about yourself as a writer—as someone who possesses unique strengths and weaknesses that can be identified, analyzed, reflected upon, developed, practiced, revised, retried, etc., just like any other skill—so that you can apply this mindset not only to your writing but to all areas in which you write throughout your life! For example, when it comes to writing emails, term papers, research reports, letters, texts or tweets, people often ask themselves questions such as “What does it mean to write well in this format?” “How should I format my document?” “What words should I use?” “How formal should my language be?” “How should I punctuate my sentences?” etc., all based on their understanding of writing as a craft or skill that they can develop over time through practice and feedback from others (see Chapters 4–7 for more information on learning strategies, especially Chapters 6–7. While it is important to consider these questions when writing any type of document or text (see Chapter 8), it is equally important to think about this mindset when answering these questions because having these questions in mind can help you identify potential strengths and weaknesses in your writing process by identifying points at which you can take contrp over your own process and make changes to improve your writing skills over time! This means thinking about yourself as a writer—how you approach writing tasks at schop or work, how you approach writing tasks outside schop or work hours as hobbies or for fun—based on what kind of writer you perceive yourself to be! By thinking about yourself in this way—as both a reader who reads texts for different purposes as well as as a writer who writes texts for different purposes—you can begin to identify the ways that your own approach to reading informs your own approach to writing as well as the ways that your own approach to writing informs your own approach to reading! In addition, by doing this reflection process, you may begin to notice patterns in your own reading/writing habits that can be addressed by making changes in your reading/writing approach so that you can improve both your reading skills as well as your writing skills! Finally, while much has been written about the importance of developing a reader’s mindset (see Chapter 9), the importance of developing a writer’s mindset cannot be overemphasized because it enables us to identify our strengths (what we are already doing well. as well as our weaknesses (what we need to work on next. so that we can make informed decisions about our learning process without blindly fplowing instructions from others or getting overly frustrated by our perceived lack of progress! Reflecting on your own reading/writing habits can reveal things about yourself as a writer that you may never have noticed before; but once you identify them, recognizing them can help you develop new strategies for working with difficult situations in the future or even help you change things up just for fun so that you do not get stuck doing the same thing over and over again! So
