How to Write an Essay Introduction for IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 Topic. Advice on How to Write an Essay Introduction for IELTS Writing Task 2.
(Even if you're not taking IELTS, this should help give you a good idea of how to write an article introduction.)
IELTS Academic Writing Tasks 1 and 2 both ask you to write articles by using the same format. one introductory paragraph fplowed by three supporting paragraphs.
Task 1 (General Training. and Task 2 (Academic. ask different types of questions but the general format stays the same. When you get to the writing tasks in your IELTS test, it’s very important that you fplow this format straight away because it shows your examiner that you can fplow instructions and that you understand how to write a good article.
It’s also important to remember that in Task 1 and Task 2 articles, you should never refer to yourself. The IELTS examiners want to know what the answer to their question is and how you would go about answering it. They don’t want you to tell them about your own experiences and opinions and they certainly don’t want to read an article where you talk about yourself. So we’re going to look at how to write an article introduction for Task 1 and Task 2 that doesn’t refer to ‘you’ or ‘I’. Ready? Let’s start with Task 1.
Task 1 Essay Introduction Example
The fplowing example has been written specifically for IELTS General Training Task 1, but it would work well for Task 2 as well. It’s a good way to show an examiner that there is a clear structure to your article and that you know how to write a good introduction. It’s written in the past tense and the examiner will expect all Task 1 articles to be written in the past tense. Note how the introduction leads smoothly into the first paragraph. You could write an article introduction in the present tense instead, but the examiner expects Task 1 articles to be written in the past tense so do what they expect! See how this introduction discusses different things that could affect customer choice without giving any opinions. This is a good way to avoid talking about ‘you’ or ‘I’. All opinions in a Task 1 article belong in the conclusion because the examiner only wants facts and information from your introduction. The conclusion can include your own opinions but they must be backed up with facts from the body paragraphs. Note how the conclusion summarizes the points made in the body paragraphs, highlighting the most important points made in each paragraph. Task 2 Essay Introduction Example
The fplowing example has been written specifically for IELTS Academic Task 2, but it would work well for General Training Task 2 as well. Again, it’s important that you fplow the same format throughout your article if possible because it shows that you can fplow instructions. Notice how the introduction goes straight into discussing whether or not this type of approach is effective, avoiding any discussion of ‘you’ or ‘I’. This is another way of making sure your sentence structure doesn’t contain any personal pronouns. Instead of saying ‘you should do X’ or ‘I think people should do X’ say ‘X is best because…’ This sets up your argument more effectively and makes your opinion easier to back up with facts later on in your article. Notice how this introduction gives some examples of how things could be improved before moving straight into saying whether or not this type of approach is effective. This is another way of setting up your argument efficiently. It also helps make it easier for you to back up your argument later on in the article with relevant examples. Notice how the conclusion summarizes what has been said in each paragraph before moving on to restate your main point in different words. This is what you need to do when writing an exam article introduction for IELTS Academic Task 2. Good luck! Start practicing with our free IELTS Writing Practice Tests!
