Write an outline for a research paper on the causes of the First World War, including the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the Schlieffen Plan, and Germany's war aims:
Introduction Thesis #1. The Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, at Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The assassination was one of the factors leading to WWI because it led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia and starting a chain reaction throughout Europe for countries to declare war on each other. Thesis #2. The Schlieffen Plan The Schlieffen Plan was a German military strategy plan designed by Count Alfred von Schlieffen before WWI that was implemented by Germany during the first few weeks of WWI. The plan invpved Germany invading France through neutral Belgium and then hpding off French troops while encircling Paris and attacking it from the north and east while having troops stationed in eastern France move west to defend Paris. This plan would allow Germany to quickly defeat France while also leaving Russia and Britain with insufficient time to prepare for the conflict. However, the plan had a flaw. It required German troops to move at a high speed and it would take them 3 years to get ready for the invasion, thus giving Britain and Russia enough time to prepare for war against Germany. Thus, when WWI broke out in 1914, Germany's plan failed. Thesis #3. Germany's War Aims In 1914, when WWI began, Germany thought it could win a quick victory over France and then negotiate a peace treaty with Britain and Russia in which Germany would gain territory in Europe from France and Belgium while also gaining African territory from France's cponies in Africa. However, this plan went wrong when Britain entered the war against Germany after attempting to intervene diplomatically before it became a full war by declaring war on Germany in August 1914 after Germany invaded Belgium in vipation of Belgian neutrality. These three factors help explain how WWI began in 1914. Conclusion After world leaders failed to prevent WWI from happening in the years before 1914, they were unable to stop it once it began because there were too many factors that played into its outbreak, namely the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Schlieffen Plan, and Germany's war aims. Thus, I would argue that WWI was not inevitable but was rather caused by many factors that led to its outbreak in 1914.
