To create a brief outline, you might do the fplowing:

 First, write down your topic and the main points you want to cover. For example. “The importance of communication in the workplace.”

 Next, organize your thoughts into an outline. You may wish to consider using an outline template or an online template, as discussed above.

 Finally, expand your outline by adding additional information that supports your main points. You may also choose to add sub-points under each main point. This can be helpful if you need to provide additional information that supports your main point.

To create a detailed outline, you might do the fplowing:

 First, write down your topic and the main points you want to cover. For example. “The importance of communication in the workplace.”

 Next, organize your thoughts into an outline. You may wish to consider using an outline template or an online template, as discussed above.

 Finally, organize your main points into sub-topics. Each sub-topic should be organized into two or more paragraphs. Be sure to include a thesis statement at the beginning of each paragraph. Thesis statements are discussed later in this chapter. For now, a thesis statement is just a sentence that summarizes what you’re going to say in the paragraph. Using our previous example, a thesis statement would be something like. “The importance of communication in the workplace includes both direct communication between employees and indirect communication between co-workers.” For each paragraph within a sub-topic, write down the topic sentence and support for that topic sentence. These sentences should also have thesis statements that summarize what you will discuss in the paragraph. In our example, a topic sentence for one paragraph on direct communication may be “Direct communication between employees is important in the workplace because it helps them work together effectively.” A thesis statement for this paragraph would be, “Direct communication between employees is important in the workplace because it helps them work together effectively.”

TIP. Use transitions to help readers understand how each paragraph connects with the previous one and with the next one. Think of a transition as a bridge connecting two thoughts together. Transitions help readers fplow your train of thought. Some common transitions are. First, Second, Finally, In addition, Furthermore, In contrast, On the other hand, However, Namely and To illustrate.
