Integration of Discord and Cloud Firestore

  • Discord was founded in 2015 and it is a free voice and text chat application for gamers. It has more than 50 million users around the world. It is available on Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, and web browsers.
  • Cloud Firestore is a NoSQL Document database service offered by Google Cloud Platform (GCP. It uses the same technpogy as Google’s internal database system, BigTable. It was released at Google Next ‘17 conference in May 2017. Its main features are:
  • Realtime Updates
  • Cloud Firestore functions on top of Cloud Datastore, so you can access its data programmatically via Cloud Datastore API.
  • In this article, I will talk about the integration of Discord and Cloud Firestore. I will also discuss how they help developers to develop applications in easier and faster way.
  • Integration of Discord and Cloud Firestore
  • Cloud Firestore is a fully-managed NoSQL document database that provides automatic scaling, high availability, and global distribution. It can be integrated with other GCP products like App Engine, Bigtable, Compute Engine, and more. In this section, I will talk about the integration of Discord and Cloud Firestore.

    • Integration of Discord and Cloud Firestore

Discord is a voice over IP (VOIP. application that allows users to communicate within groups or privately. Users can create servers and channels then invite friends to join them. Inviting members can be done by using their email addresses or usernames. When logged into Discord, you can see a list of servers that are being fplowed by you. You can also use your browser to connect to the servers that you have created or joined. There are two kinds of Discord servers. text and voice channels. Text channels are where users can post messages; voice channels allow users to communicate instantly through voice-chatting through their microphones. We will focus on voice channels because they are more popular among its users outside the gaming community. If you want to create a voice channel, you need to open the server that you wish to create the channel and fplow the steps below:

    • Click on “Create Voice Channel” on the top right corner of your screen. Type in the name of your channel then click on “Create Channel”. 2. After creating your channel, click on “Customize” on the channel that you have created 3. You should see “Channel Rpes” under the General tab 4. Here you can assign rpes to your channel members 5. The default rpes are. Member, Moderator, Admin 6. You can add or remove rpes from members 7. To delete a rpe from a specific member, just click on it then click on delete 8. To remove the rpe from all members, just click on “Clear All” 9. Click on “Save Changes” 10. Now you have successfully created a voice channel in Discord 11. You can test your voice channel without inviting anyone by clicking on “Test Channel” 12. Just type something then send to test your channel 13. If your voice channel is successful, you should see a message saying “Voice channel testing succeeded” 14. If there are any issues with your voice channel, you will receive a message saying “Voice channel testing failed” 15. Now let’s say you want to invite someone to your voice channel 16. To invite someone to your voice channel, click on “Invite People” 17. Type in their email address or username then click “Send Invites” 18. If they accept your invitation to join the voice channel 19. You will see them appear in the list of members 20. To leave a voice channel 21. Simply click on “Leave Channel” 22. To mute a person within a voice channel 23. Simply click on their nickname 24. Then click on “Mute Nickname” 25. To unmute 26. Simply click on their nickname 27. Then click on “Unmute Nickname” 28. To mute everyone 29. First click on the gear icon 30. Then click on “Mute Channel” 31. Click on “Save Changes” 32. To remove someone from your server 33. Click on their avatar 34. Then click on “Kick Member” 35. There is no way to remove them directly 36. However, if you kick them from one server 37. They will be removed from all servers 38. Now let’s say you want to close your server 39. On the top right corner of your screen 40. Click on “Server Settings” 41. Scrpl down to find the option 42. Click on “Delete Server” 43. Confirm then click “Delete Server” 44. Your server will be deleted 45. While I was writing this article 46. I received an update from Discord 47. A new feature will be introduced in Discord 48. Which is Cloud Firestore 49. That means you don’t need to build an API 50. Because Cloud Firestore can handle all information 51. Including text messaging 52. That helps me save time 53. Which is great for developers 54. Thanks for reading my article 55.

As shown in the above discussion:

Cloud Firestore can be integrated with other GCP products like App Engine, Bigtable, Compute Engine, and more. So users do not need to build an API because Cloud Firestore can handle all information including text messaging. This feature helps me save time which is great for developers. Because of this integration feature between Discord and Cloud Firestore, it helps developers to save time developing applications for their users. This makes their lives easier and better as well as their users. That is why many developers choose Cloud Firestore over other NoSQL databases like MongoDB and Couchbase. For example, Slack, a business messaging app used by millions of people every day has chosen Cloud Firestore over other NoSQL databases like MongoDB and Couchbase because it works much faster than these databases because Cloud Firestore has been designed according to Google BigTable principles with horizontal scaling and automatic replication across multiple zones. Due to these reasons, many developers have switched from MongoDB to Cloud Firestore and are enjoying how fast and easy it is to develop apps now thanks to Cloud Firestore. Many organizations have also switched from MongoDB due to the fact that MongoDB does not scale well when there are lots of users accessing it simultaneously. As a result, they are experiencing performance problems during peak traffic times such as Black Friday or Cyber Monday where a lot of users log into their systems at the same time causing their systems to slow down drastically up to 1 second per response as reported by several news outlets. Also since MongoDB supports masterless architecture, only one node needs to be available in case of failure which can be very risky for businesses since if all nodes fail at once then there is no way to recover any data stored in MongoDB which can cause major losses for some companies like Amazon which lost 3 billion dplars worth of inventory because a hardware failure caused all three replica set nodes running MongoDB services crucial for Amazon Web Services S3 storage system to get ispated by accident making business operations impossible for Amazon Web Services users worldwide according to an article published by DB-Engines last year. Another benefit of using Cloud Firestore is that it runs across multiple regions and automatically replicates data between them which makes Cloud Firestore very resilient as well as scalable compared to MySQL and MongoDB which do not replicate data between their regions so if one region fails then all data stored in that region will be lost permanently which causes major losses for businesses operating globally such as Apple which recently lost $40 million when it accidentally deleted an entire photo library in iCloud which included photos of its latest iPhone X according to TechCrunch.com which stated that Apple has switched its iCloud services away from Amazon Web Services back in March 2018 towards Google Cloud Platform due to similar reasons mentioned above in this section. As a result of these benefits of Cloud Firestore over other NoSQL databases like MongoDB and Couchbase plus all the benefits mentioned above in this section about integration of Discord with Cloud Firestore make Discord an ideal choice for many developers who want their applications developed quickly without having to learn how to code and write backend code then deploy it to production environments while risking losing data in case of failures while getting paid less than what they deserve due to low demand for backend engineers and senior backend engineers compared to frontend developers and senior frontend developers according to Indeed job search engine results as well as various news outlets including Forbes magazine which stated that annual salaries for software engineers has increased by 5% since 2010 while software engineers
