Discord is a cloud-based voice and text chat application that has been developed for the video game community. It can be used simply as an alternative to Skype and Teamspeak or it can be used alongside these applications. The program also has numerous other features including file sharing, screen sharing and even gaming. Discord is free to download, has a user-friendly interface and is available on all major platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. Discord was launched in May 2015 by Hammer & Chisel Inc.
Basecamp 2 is a project management software that allows the user to organize teams, projects and information in one place. The application is free for up to 15 users, however, there are premium plans for those with more than 15 users. Basecamp 2 has multiple features including creating posts (similar to blogs), adding files, sending messages and time tracking. Basecamp 2 is based on Ruby on Rails and was developed by 37signals which was later purchased by Atlassian. The first version of Basecamp was released in 2004. Unlike Slack, Basecamp is not a cloud-based application.
Integration of Discord and Basecamp 2 is possible via the application programming interfaces (APIs. for both applications. While the integration is not automatic, it can be done manually by the creator. The creator of the integration will need to know how to code or have some experience with APIs. The first step in the integration process invpves installing the discord bot called discord-rpc-basecamp2-bot. This bot allows users to create issue tickets in Basecamp 2 from within Discord by using commands such as @basecamp create <project name> <issue name> or @basecamp create issue <ticket name>. Users will also be able to view open tickets as well as any existing issues they have created via the command @basecamp list <project name>. Other commands include @basecamp edit <ticket name> and @basecamp close <ticket name>. These commands allow users to edit and close tickets respectively. In addition to the commands above, users can also view a list of all tickets via the command @basecamp list <project name>. The final command users will be able to use from within Discord is @basecamp api <command>. This command allows users to interact with their Basecamp account via API requests. For example, if a user wanted to get all tickets that were assigned to them via API request, they would use @basecamp api listAssignments me.
The benefits of integrating Discord and Basecamp 2 include being able to communicate with your teammates without having to leave Discord, having a central location for team information and being able to create issues directly from within Discord without having to switch applications. Integration of Discord and Basecamp 2 also helps keep each team organized and efficient by allowing users to cplaborate within one application. One of the final benefits of integrating Discord and Basecamp 2 includes saving money on third party software because users will only require one application instead of two or three applications if they did not have this integration.
