First, I will give a brief introduction about Device Magic and Amazon CloudWatch.

  • Amazon CloudWatch is a monitoring service for AWS (Amazon Web Services. resources and applications. With Amazon CloudWatch, you can monitor the performance of your AWS resources and applications, as well as automate actions based on changes in those metrics. You can monitor AWS resources such as EC2 instances, ELBs (Elastic Load Balancers), and RDS (Relational Database Service. instances and applications including ECS (Elastic Container Service. tasks, Lambda functions, and AppStream 2.0 applications.

    The main part of the article is to describe how Device Magic and Amazon CloudWatch work together.

    • Integration of Device Magic and Amazon CloudWatch

    There are three major components in the integration of Device Magic and Amazon CloudWatch. Device Magic SDK, Device Magic Command Line Interface (CLI), and AWS Lambda function. The fplowing figure shows the overall architecture of the integration.

    The diagram above shows that Device Magic SDK works with the Device Magic Command Line Interface (CLI. to send events from the IoT device to Amazon CloudWatch. Then it uses AWS Lambda function to push the events to the Device Magic server. AWS Lambda function does not have any access to your IoT data. It just pushes the events to the Device Magic server in real time at a fixed interval you configure through the AWS Management Conspe or CLI. The Device Magic server then compiles these events into monthly or daily reports which you can then view in the Device Magic platform. The Device Magic server only has read access to your IoT data which are stored in S3 buckets. All your IoT data are encrypted before they are sent to Amazon CloudWatch through HTTPS protocp by the Device Magic SDK. This means that no one other than yourself can read your IoT data. You can use Device Magic server for free for 30 days without any credit card required if your usage is less than 100GB per month. If your usage exceeds 100GB per month, you can always purchase more capacity from AWS Marketplace. The current price is USD0.007 per GB per month with a minimum charge of USD5 per month. This means that it will cost you about USD50 per month for 10 TB of IoT data, assuming that you do not exceed 1 million events per day.
