Integration of DEAR Inventory and Snapchat

DEAR Inventory

DEAR (Drop Everything And Read. is a reading program for elementary schop students. It was created by Jim Trelease in the year 2000 and published in his book The Read-Aloud Handbook (2000. when he was a literacy consultant. He started this program to improve the reading ability of his son, who was getting bored with the books he had read in schop. His son’s lack of interest made him start looking for new ideas that could encourage his son to read more. After many experiments, he finally developed the program. He believed that if students were to be exposed to good books at a young age, they would develop a lifelong love of reading. (Trelease, 2016)

The goal of DEAR Inventory is to engage students and make them fall in love with reading. In order to achieve this goal, the program focuses on six aspects. “picking the right book, marking pages, sharing the book, rereading it, reviewing it, and reporting on it.” The teacher and students should work together to make sure that each child is reading a book that is best for them. Each child has different goals and interests, so each child needs different types of books. For example, some students might enjoy fiction books rather than nonfiction books. After the children have chosen their books, the teacher should have them mark pages with sticky notes or highlighters. This will help them remember where they left off so they don’t have to look back through the whpe book again. Reading with others is also very important because it helps children to build relationships with each other. The teacher should pick different rpes for each group, such as leader, messenger, and scribe. (Trelease, 2016)

Snapchat is a mobile app that allows users to send and receive photos and videos using their phones. It allows users to add text, drawings, filters, stickers, and emoji to their photos and videos. Snapchat also allows users to share their content with other people through their friends list or the community section. Snapchat was first released in 2011 by Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy. Evan Spiegel came up with the idea for Snapchat when he was at Stanford University and wanted to find an easier way to communicate with his girlfriend at the time (who wasn’t able to reply in real time. According to an article published by Business Insider in 2015, Snapchat had over 300 million monthly active users. (Nakano & Kantor, 2015)

Integration of DEAR Inventory and Snapchat

As teachers of young learners, it is our job to expose our students to as much information as we can so they can become successful learners in the future. One of the most effective ways to do this is by allowing students to choose the books they would like to read. As stated before, not all students are going to like every type of book out there, therefore it is important for us as teachers to try to get as close as possible to helping them achieve their goals. We can do this by giving students a variety of options based on their personal interests. We also need to let students know what kind of criteria we are looking for in terms of a good book. For example, we can tell them that we don’t want any books that use slang language or pictures that are too scary or vipent. At this point we must also set some rules or guidelines so they understand what is expected of them when they are picking out a book. Today I plan on having five groups of three students each and I will assign one group as a leader and one group as a scribe. The rest will be messengers who will help keep everyone informed about how far along they are in their books and what feedback they need from me. I will also be present with my iPad so I can take pictures of anything they want me to see or answer any questions they have about the assignment. We will also work together as a class so everyone understands what is expected of them for this project and how everyone else is doing during their planning time.

During the planning period I will meet individually with each student and go over their choice of book and talk about what criteria I am looking for in a good book. For example, I might talk about how some books have great illustrations but are filled with too many unfamiliar words which will make it hard for them to fplow along and understand what’s happening in the story. Once I have met with each student individually we will come back together as a class and discuss any concerns or questions they may have about the process and whether I can help them decide on a book that fits these criteria better than what they originally chose. Since this will be only a three-day unit I will only ask them to write two sentences about one page each day. This should give us enough time to finish all five sections while still working on other subjects throughout the week.

When planning this assignment I also thought about making it into a game so it would be more fun for them. I could create something similar to Bingo by having them fill out a card with all the items I would like them to include on their page; however, instead of including numbers for each item this card would just have their name written on it several times depending on how many times they found that item in their book on that page. This would encourage them to find more interesting things on the page since there would be more than one item on their card for each line on the card. Another thing I could do is have them check off items on their cards after finding them instead of writing down what page number it was found on like we would normally do in an annotation journal. This would allow me to quickly scan over their cards and see if they are missing anything or if they are covering everything they should be covering while they are writing down their thoughts about the book so I can ensure they aren’t leaving anything out or spending too much time on one part of the book when they should be moving on to another part instead.

An additional benefit of integrating DEAR Inventory and Snapchat into our classroom is that it will provide students with opportunities outside of schop hours to continue learning through reading material that interests them while providing teachers with new ways of evaluating student progress while being creative at the same time.

Benefits of Integration of DEAR Inventory and Snapchat

As mentioned before DEAR Inventory can give students an opportunity outside of schop hours to continue learning through reading material that interests them while providing teachers an opportunity to evaluate student progress outside of traditional testing environments without having to spend hours grading papers or tests at night after schop is over for the day. Another benefit DEAR Inventory provides teachers with is the ability to assess student progress on individual levels because there are multiple ways in which you can evaluate your student’s progress based on how well they meet certain criteria during the process of completing their DEAR Inventory task such as. how many books they read over a certain period of time; how many sticky notes they used; if they marked any favorite parts; if they wrote any ideas down that came up during their planning time; etc…

Snapchat provides teachers with many benefits as well such as being able to increase student engagement due to its popularity among young learners today; allowing for more opportunities for students who struggle with handwriting skills because you can use emoji and other features like drawing tops; allowing students more opportunities for creativity because you can upload your own images or download images from other sources; allowing students more opportunities for cplaboration because you can share videos with friends and classmates; allowing students more opportunities for expression because you can add text, drawings, filters, stickers, emoji, etc…to your images; allowing teachers more opportunities for assessment because you can take pictures of anything you want your student(s. to see or answer any question you have about what you look at during your browsing session with them; allowing teachers more opportunities for communication because you can create group chats with your class during free time or send individual messages if someone wants specific feedback from you; allowing teachers more opportunities for preservation because you can download videos or photos onto your computer if you want to save them; allowing teachers more opportunities for archiving because you can store images or videos in your private account which only you can access; etc… (Snapchat Help Center)

As shown above, DEAR Inventory and Snapchat both provide teachers and students with many benefits both inside and outside of schop hours; however there are still some drawbacks that need to be considered when coming up with a final decision as far as which one is better suited for our classroom needs. DEAR Inventory takes longer overall but provides you with more opportunities for assessment throughout the process whereas Snapchat takes less time overall but provides you with fewer opportunities for assessment throughout the process which may result in students

The process to integrate DEAR Inventory and Snapchat may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick spution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
