DEAR stands for Direct, Emotional, Assertive, and Respectful. It is an acronym used to help one remember the steps in a respectful way of dealing with conflict. The goal of the DEAR method is to respve conflict in a manner that is as non-confrontational as possible. According to the author of the DEAR method, Dr. Leslie Becker-Phelps, the key to effective communication is to be direct, emotional, assertive, and respectful.
The DEAR method is organized in four steps:
Direct. Express your feelings in non-blaming, non-judgmental language. For example, “When you are late coming home from work, I feel afraid because I don’t know where you are” (not “You’re always late! How could you do this to me again?”)
Emotional. Have your partner identify his or her feelings. The DEAR method assumes that “healthy people have appropriate feelings” and focuses on how they feel rather than why they feel that way.
Assertive. Express your needs. For example. “I need to know where you are when you are out late at night” or “I need you to call me when you will be late.”
Respectful. Make clear what you want from your partner. This might include a specific behavior change, such as “I need you to call me three hours before you get home so I know when to start dinner” or “I need you to talk with me when things bother you.”
